RESERVE AUCTIONS
      #390340 - Thu Apr 03 2008 09:57 PM

Any users out there know why you can only place a reserve of £50 for auctions these days?

Thanks

EBay brought it in quite a while ago simply to 'move' items below £50. Some punters were putting reserves on everything they sold.

Therefore, a lot of auctions were being put on with reserves that never actually got met. EBay decided that below £50 you would have to take a risk! Nice.

Best workround is either a Buy Now or a higher start price nearer what you actually want to get. Of course you can always take the risk!

Cheers for the info, quite silly really, some items under £50 need a reserve.

Agreed, but the opposite side of the coin is from a buyer's viewpoint you can get some bargains.

As a seller there are some standbys.

As mentioned you can do a Buy Now, but you risk not selling or even missing out on an auction 'frenzy' and getting more!

You can set a higher reserve on an auction, but that can put punters off.

You can just start low at 99p. This has had good and bad results for me. We do items on Buy Now mostly, but sometimes do an auction. Very often you get two dolts fighting over an item that they could get off you for less! Useful if you have more than one as you can do a Second Chance.

The final option is one that will get a few frowns. You stick it on, (making sure it finishes at a time when you can be AT the PC) and if it gets close to the end without reaching your target you pull it by using End Item. (Okay! Stop frowning everyone! The option IS there!). You get two options - sell to the highest bidder or just cancel the thing.

Disadvantages: You will REALLY annoy people. You MIGHT miss out on a late frenzy (you can usually get a guide by the number of Watchers - but we have stuff with 5-10 watchers that sometimes does not sell).

Advantage: The item lives to sell another day.

Remember the basics:

Good picture. Good title (use good search 'keywords' - what would you type in to find it?). Honest and full description. Remember that the time you list at IS the time it will finish. Best results between 8pm and 10pm. Check the day it will finish - avoid Dancing on Ice finals etc!
