Frequent freezing slow boot up
      #390332 - Thu Apr 03 2008 08:27 PM

Hi all I getting a lot of trouble with slow boot up and frequent freezing when opening web pages, I have had Bricat check my HJT and found no problem there.
My problem got worse when I tried to install a Backup program (Arconis)somehow I botched up and now want to uninstall it, regards the freezing it usually lasts from seconds to several minutes when I can not use the mouse or keyboard when I am able I have gone to the task manager to find the site is marked "not responding", in other cases though the page does appear if I wait long enough?.
I thought this may be high activity at the time on net but I have tried all hours AM PM with no significant improvement. I have 2/3rds of unused memory so I do not think thats the problem as Bricat suggested its likely my settings but thats out of my powers I am afraid.
there is a post in HJT Forum that you may care to visit
Cheers

Travelman , task manager is the best bet to find out what's going on. As soon as you can get it open check under the processes tab to see what application is hogging the most memory.

It could be just about anything that's causing your problem so I'll kick off the thread with a couple of things , maybe others can throw in a few suggestions ,

Is it IE7 you're using ? Have you tried running it and browsing with no add ons ?

Which firewall are you using ? Can you turn it off and use the windows one short term to see if there's a problem there ?

Have you reduced the start up apps , looking at your hijacklog there seems to be a few that's not needed .

Many thanks Fifeflyer for your help I have had a look at the task bar Apps and as you say there is a lot there thing is which do I choose there is so many, for instance I have 7 entries for sychost.exe using of a total of 40.000K do I need all those entries?
If I highlight a particular one and end process will that delete it permanently?
I know what a lot are for but there is some with unidentified names
I do not want to do something that I will regret later
Cheers

Yeah , the task manager can look a bit scary.

Ideally you want to look in the task manager when the pc freezes. It's a case of trying to identify the process that's causing this.
If you can , the next time you have a problem , open the task manager .The two columns that give the best info are "Image name" and "CPU". When the pc freezes it's very likely that one "image name" will show a VERY HIGH "CPU" reading , a few will show a small CPU reading , and the majority no CPU reading at all. It's the one that sticks out that we need to nail if we can. ( not i might add "system idle process" , that in normal circumstances is high as it is the CPU that's NOT being used)

No , it just stops the process .
There are some system processes that will not allow you to "end" them , some that will allow you to stop them but if it's a critical process stopping them could cause you to lose data or cause the pc to become unstable , and others such as your antivirus app for example which simply stop your antivirus running until such a time as you physically restarted it. Basically the best advice is you're not sure leave well alone.

Hope that all makes sense. It's ironic actually , my brother had a similar situation to yours recently , pc kept freezing couldn't work out why. Opened the task manager when this happened and noticed one process which was using all the CPU. I managed to identify it as Adaware 2007 so the next time the pc froze i knew it was safe to end the process via the task manager.......bingo instant "unfreeze". Tested this a few times , same result. Seems Adaware was starting up in the background for no reason. Never got to the bottom of it and eventually uninstalled Adaware..........no problems since. I'm not saying your situation may be as easy as that but it's a starting point.

If you're not sure , Google the name or post it/them here.

All systems will have multiple entries of Svchost , they're required by the operating system. 7 doesn't sound excessive ( i have 6 ) ( Some viruses are known to disguise themselves by using this name but as your Hijacklog is clean i think we can rule that out.

Did you try running IE without add ons. A corrupt add on can cause the browser to freeze.
Click on start > all programs > accessories > system tools > Internet Explorer ( no addons ). Do a bit of browsing to see if it still freezes.

Fifeflyer many thanks you have explained it very well but when you mentioned Anti Virus a bell rang in my head as I have failed to mention before that my router has been playing up losing the connection I get a message saying not connected but if I look at the router everything is normal, this happens very quickly then it connects in seconds.so I have just disconnected all the cables both ends and waited 10 minutes and then connected up again and rebooted its been running now over a hour and my problem seems to be rectified although to soon to be certain so going to leave alone but will update you if the problem returns
Cheers
