1. Borrow a WinXP CD from a friend, boot from it and select the first R for the Recovery Console. When the command prompt (>) appears type chkdsk /r (note the space) and press Enter. I’m not hugely confident but this is worth trying and may just work.
2. If 1) above doesn’t work, I think it’s best to do a clean install of XP. Make a note of the 25 character code that can be found on a sticker on the case then, using the friend's CD, install as per here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm
