I have been using Firefox for a long time without any serious problems. I have one of the options set so that anything I download is put into a folder called D:\Downloads
I have just been trying to download a file called TO.EXE and get the following error message:
"Downloading C:\Docume~1\Admini~1\Locals~1\Temp\1yn4u9gw.exe" followed by "C:\Docume~1\Admini~1\Locals~1\Temp\1yn4u9gw.exe could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder"
Can anyone suggest what has gone wrong and how to put it right? I have checked "Tools\Options\Main" in Firefox and the download folder is still D:\Downloads so I don't understand why things are being directed to the C: drive and to a temporary folder, or why the file name has been changed.
This happened after I downloaded a large (600-odd MB) file yesterday. I also updated Firefox to version 2.0.0.13 yesterday but I doubt if the update is the problem.
Can anyone help, please?

Have you tried re-setting this , by that i mean change the downloads settings , eg different folder and then closing Firefox , then going back in to change back to your original settings before closing Firefox once again and trying the download.
Another thought , clear your download history.....Tools > Downloads > Clean Up.

Thanks FyfeFlyer, I have followed both of your suggestions but the situation remains the same. I think that there is more than meets the eye here because the computer has got very slow, the mouse only seems to work when it feels like it and a program that I have been using with no problems, suddenly won't run. This latter development is, apparently, because it has had its permissions for writing to the registry withdrawn. I haven't withdrawn them (don't know how to) and no one else uses the machine so it is all a mystery as to what is going on.
I have defragged, registry-cleaned and used Ccleaner to clear up temporary and other files, all to no avail
I have checked for viruses and other malware but didn't find anything

Which program ??

Where does this information come from ??

Is this download critical ? can you live without it ? If you can a system restore might be the easiest option.

Hi FyfeFlyer
The program that has suddenly stopped running is an Install/Uninstall program that doesn't leave "debris" on the hard disc after a program is installed or uninstalled.
The producers of the program sent a "bug catching" file to run whose output I sent to them. They said that the program wouldn't run because it could not write to the registry anymore. They said ".... see also from the debug report that TU is unable to get the necessary privileges for accessing registry: SeDebugPrivilege SeBackupPrivilege SeRestorePrivilege
I don't know what a "SeDebugPrivilege" is or where to find it
I have moved the large file from the folder on my HD to a CD and that seems to have resolved the problem with Firefox
I can't use system restore because I turned it off after removing a virus and got interrupted and forgot to switch it back on.......(!)

Good stuff.

I presume this is a Beta version of the application that you're testing out.
