I have heard about portable application which can be carried on a USB pen drive and can be run from any PC. I have a couple of these which are in zip folders but how will these work ? lets say a portable application of GIMP image editor : will i have to unzip all the files of that application on the computer i will be using ? & then when i have finished using the portable program, should i delete the unzipped files ?
thank you

sorry mate...not everybody can understand in 1 go that why people come to webuser threads coz language it easy. Thank you for the help but not much information though. its says "
To start up GIMP Portable, just double-click GIMPPortable.exe file where you installed GIMP Portable on your portable drive. Then, use it just like you would a local copy of GIMP.
but what if the portable application is a zip file, where to extract the contents of that zip file, onto the USB portanle drive or onto the PC u r using ? Cheers mate..

I presume you know what a Zip file/folder is and know how you would use that zipped file/folder.
If you don't, I'll try explain. It is a file/folder that has been compressed to make it smaller. Downloading is quicker using a smaller, zipped file/folder.
You need to unzip/extract the file/folder to reveal it's contents. These files are the ones you need to use. Remove the zipped ones as they are not required any more.
This can be done any where you like, even on the Flash (Pen) drive that you plan to use.
The whole idea of the 'Portable' applications is that you don't actually put them on the other PC. If this was the case, why bother with the portable concept.
Give it a go yourself, no harm done by trying. You may even be able to post back and tell us all how you got on!

thank you for such clear explanation...much appreciate. I do get the facts now. what i had been doing was, unzipping/extracting the files onto the computer which i was working on by creating a temp. folder & then deleting it after i finished what i had to do. But like you mentioned the whole idea of a portable drive/application is to unzip/extract the files onto that same portable/pen drive. so, in other words if you are left with 90 or 120KB of spare/free memory on the portable drive, we wont be able to extract/unzip the files ?...coz unzipping/extracting the zipped folder would need some space on the portable drive, wont it ?
cheers mate
