I have accidentally uninstalled the driver for the keyboard on my Dell Dimension 4500. ""No problem" I thought, "I have the Resource Disk containing the drivers." But I was wrong - the Resource Disk I recently received from Dell does not contain any keyboard drivers. Can anyone suggest another source for the driver?
There are some important consequences, since I cannot use the keyboard I cannot log on as the Administrator because I cannot type-in the password. I can log-in using the Guest account and run a number of programs, if I only use the mouse, because the Guest account does not need a password, but, as a Guest, I cannot use System Restore or change items using the Control Panel. I am typing this request on my Inspiron.

11.30 a.m. Unfortunately, the problem has now worsened, I can no longer run Windows on the Dimension 4500. I have tried booting-up whilst pressing the F8 button, the usual page opens offering various choices and I have tried several of these but now the computer fails to download the Windows opening screen and hangs without any trace on the screen. There is no residual mouse pointer shown.
This problem seems even worse than the previous one. Please can anyone help?

This sounds to me as though you have removed more than a keyboard driver. If it is only a keyboard problem, even a special keyboard, plugging in a different one should solve it
The first thing to do is to run chkdsk to eliminate any disk errors. So, boot from the WinXP CD, choose Repair and when you get the prompt type chkdsk /r (note the space) and press Enter.
Let us know how you get on.

To BurrWalnut: Thanks for your reply: I have checked all of the hardware by clicking on f10 when booting up, this allows me to run the Diagnostic, No hardware problems were found, the mouse passed the diagnostic tests and also the keyboard. This did not surprise me since I was using the keyboard to make the choices when using the Bios. I have now reinstalled Windows XP from the System disk but on booting-up I cannot log-in because there is no apparent response from the mouse. I need to find a way to download the driver again.

Have you tried unplugging the keyboard, then switching the computer on and plugging it back in? I would think it would then treat it as new hardware and search for drivers. Worth a try if you haven't done so already.
Can you download the driver on a friend's PC and save to floppy or CD? then install?

Thanks to those who have tried to help, after further complications I have now had the C: drive reformatted and Windows XP has been reinstalled. The computer is now working and I have managed to reinstall most of my backed-up data and programs, however, I have lost some important files. The lesson? Be more organised with backing-up important data.
