Turning back the system
      #389193 - Sun Mar 23 2008 07:23 AM

A few weeks ago, after a period of sluggish operating, an IT guy did a sort out to my machine and ever since it has run like a dream. He told me whilst it's running well, don't fiddle with controls, leave well alone.

About a fortnight ago, I read somewhere that it is possible to change the way a computer runs etc, simply by clicking on something. I foolishly did and ever since, it has been slow on sites that previously gave no trouble. I now have to go and find that recommendation so that I can refer to it and try to undo etc. I think it was on web user.

But, would I be right in thinking that somehow you can turn the system back to how it was running at a given time, ie 1 month/2 months ago?

In Windows XP and Vista there is something called System Restore which you can use to roll back your PC to an earlier date. However, it isn't fool proof and may not give you the results you want. Two questions spring to mind - (1) why didn't you listen to your expert and (2) what was this thing you clicked?

Thanks Greysts, I think I might have information that could help, but first.

I have restored the system to Mar.1st 08 which is the day after the IT work had been done. I think it is running better but I'm not convinced.

Yes, I know I'm in the wrong by not heeding advice.

As for what did I tick. I am fairly certain that within this website, I saw a tip for improving speed. There was a link to a website where there were about half a dozen options to choose from. I'm sure I chose improved speed/computer. Somewhere at the back of my mind, it could have been a FF add-on.

What I have done to try and find a link/clue, is look at a great many threads on this site. I noticed that wherever I clicked, the red banner with the WebUser logo appeared and the page was white, the blue loading bar at the bottom of the page shot across and stopped within an eighth of an inch where it waited about 10/15 seconds before loading completely then the page appeared.

Now this oddity may be similar to other websites where I get "timed out" quite a lot.

I'm throwing this info to you in the hope it may be of use.

Unfortunately that doesn't hep me at all. There must be a million websites out there that promise the world in terms of speed improvements, but fail dismally. If it was an FF add-on it should still be showing under Tools, Add-ons.

Yes you're right and no, it isn't there. I have just returned home and taken the leads out of the router and replaced them, just in case etc. Is it my imagination or is it running better?. I think I will test this site out and see how links loa as this am, they took ages.

In the space of those few minutes, I whizzed round and clicked on half a dozen links which responded straight away.

Prior to coming here, I ran through my usual route of favourite sites and they had loaded quickly too. Now, what can we make of this?

although I'd decided to call it a day surfing, I couldn't resist the temptation to see if it was still ok and it is. Thanks for your time and patience.

I can sympathise in some ways, given that even Web user itself gives us '100 Ways To Speed Up This and That' every month, and I will be honest, not every link is a 'healthy' one.

For me I kept up to date with the Nvidia drivers and the last one (Dec 2007) appears to have rendered my graphics card virtually useless for some games - Second Life, for example, has a weird 'tartan' distortion throughout. Today I dug out my May 2007 driver - reinstalled it, ignored all the 'This driver is older than your current one' warnings and Bingo! Everything back the way it should be.

Sometimes an upgrade is a downgrade...............
