Hi guys, your help is needed yet again.... I have a desktop PC running XP and have just bought a Toshiba Dual Core laptop running Vista Home Premium. I have also bought a Belkin Wireless G+ MIMO modem router 802.11g. I have hooked up the PC using an Ethernet cable and I can access the internet fine. I have then tried to go online using the laptop and although it says I am connected to the router it says I am not online and it won't let me connect to anything at all. I had a look in the Network Centre and it had an icon labelled as my laptop and it showed the connection to the router icon but from there to the internet it has a big red cross between the two. Understand me so far? I am completely lost! What do I need to do to get online with the laptop? Please could someone put me out of my misery? Thanks very much

You haven't made it clear but do you mean you have tried to connect the laptop via wireless? If so, connect by ethernet cable first, set up your wireless security and then revert to wireless.

Hi Greysts, thanks for such a speedy response. The plot thickens.... Ok I have established that the 'wireless' part in the laptop is working fine as I went to the pub and got online straight away without having to do anything so, I tried to connect at home using an ethernet cable and no joy, it just gets the page cannot load screen. Is there anything I'm supposed to have bought that I am missing? The PC is in my room so I have a phone extension running from the main line downstairs (with a filter attached)and I have another filter plugged into the upstairs extention. If I only plug in the supplied DSL cable as the instructions state, when I try to go online on the PC I get the error msg that there was no dial tone. The modem on my PC is a Speedtouch ADSL USB modem which BT supplied with my broadband. If thats not plugged in then nothing works at all. Is there some other adaptor I need to get for the PC? DO I need another filter? I'm sorry to bombard you with all these questions but your help really is appreciated! Thankyou very much

Let's get this straight. Are you saying that you've got a router plugged into the telephone line downstairs and a Speedtouch plugged in upstairs? If you have it won't work. The router is designed to replace the Speedtouch entirely and ALL computers need to connect to the net through the router, either by wire or wireless.

Aha I understand now, I have got rid of the Speedtouch modem altogether and I now have the router downstairs and a network adaptor on the PC upstairs and all seems to be working fine. I did actually explain my exact requirements to the salesperson in the shop yesterday and he told me all I needed to do was plug in a router next to the PC and all would be fine, I had even asked him if it would work on a long phone extension and he said it would - I think someone needs to go on a refresher course before being allowed in contact with the public again!! Anyways, all seems to be ok now but thanks very much for your help and patience, it really was appreciated

I don't suppose it was PC World by any chance? Glad you're up and running. Can I check if you are connecting at least one of your PCs via wireless? If so, have you set up all the relevant security?

Hehe actually no, it was Currys Digital (Dixons) so not far off! Both the lappy and the PC are now wireless, I managed to get security set up eventually after locking myself out somehow and ended up phoning customer support but hey, all's well that ends well. Thanks again for your help
