Potential Hard Drive issues
      #388588 - Mon Mar 17 2008 12:54 PM

Hi there,

Have a number of questions on my Dell Inspiron laptop.

1. Have clicking coming from inside the laptop itself (top right hand side, near the fan). Not always though, only seems to frequently happen when watching BBC I-Player or 4-OD. Can sometimes be loud and frequent, but other times every 3 minutes or so.

Once got the blue screen of death and ever since the laptop is taking an age to boot-up. I have removed loads of programs I dont use and set my desktop to basic settings. I regularly do "disc clean up" and "de-fragment" too and Im only using 35% of my laptop's capacity - rareky download and have no large files on my laptop. Does this sound like my HD is about to go ?. Havent backed up any data yet so will need to look into that soon.

2. I also have red-lines appearing on my CPU history on task manager. Is this the related ?.

3. Finally, if my HD is gone. Would you recommend going to a small Independant store for this to be fixed or larger PC World type store ?. Budget is tight just now.

Many thanks for your help on this.

Many Dell's have a diagnostic partition built in that you can use to test the hard drive.

Press the F12 at boot up to go into the boot menu. Select Diagnostics and it should do it for you.

If you don't have that option, you need to find the manufacturer of the hard drive and run a diagnostic from thier website.

Go into Device Manager and click on the + nect to Disk Drives. What does it tell you?

If it were me, I'd charge £100 to install an 80Gb hard drive, to give you a guide when phoning places for quotes..

Thanks for that.

F12 doesnt do anything.

I have a note of the driver. Its a Samsung MP0603H. I will try to run a diagnostic from their site tonight.

F12 was a guess as I can't remember at the moment.

When the computer starts there's a brief message that says something like "Press Esc for Setup, F11 for one-time boot menu"

Press the boot menu key.

Got another Blue Screen yesterday, managed to take the following notes.

Tried to Google it but to no success...

STOP_0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0x8055abab, 0xa3356bcc, 0xa33568c8)

Any ideas ?.

Went to an independant repair shop and they've quoted £30-40 to have a look for me. Much cheaper than pc world.

Cheers

Not too bad I suppose, although it depends how much they charge to fix it once they've diagnosed it.

If you feel inclined, try testing the RAM using Memtest

Also worth taking out the hard drive to see who made it, and downloading a diagnostic utility from the manufacturer's website to test it properly.
