I'm about to invest in a new computer. I'm told that although it's possible to take the hard drive from my old computer running XP and install it on my new computer running Vista, I'll need my original XP disc to make the computer recognise the old hard drive. The old hard drive is in fact quite new as the original one failed, I had to buy my operating disc's from Packard Bell and re-install XP from there. I have been told that these disc's arn't going to work. does any one know a way round this as I would like to join the 21st centuary but still be able to run my old programmes on XP. Thanks Lul

The reason the disks won't work on your new PC is because they are what's known as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) type. That means they are specific to one PC.
Let's try and narrow down what you want to do. You could, for example, have a dual-boot system which would allow you to boot to either XP or Vista but for that you would need to uninstall Vista from your new PC, get a new XP CD to install that first and then re-install Vista. Hardly an easy option.
You could put your XP hard disk into your new PC as a slave and access your data from it but you wouldn't be able to run any programmes currently installed on your XP disk.
The easy way is simply to re-install your old programmes on your new Vista PC using the original CDs.
