PC does not boot
      #388210 - Thu Mar 13 2008 10:43 PM

I connected up my previous PC with the intentions of my wife learning PC skills. It has not been switched on for about 10 months until now.It powers up & the light is on on the CD drive does this mean it is running? There is a noise as if the fan is running however nothing else happens, it does not boot up & the monitor has a power light on but the screen does not light up.It looks as if it is still switched off.Due to the time being switched off could a flat battery cause these problems or is it something more drastic!Any suggestions appreciated. It has XP Pro loaded.

If the CMOS battery was at fault you would probably receive a message.

Has it been stored somewhere where it could have been knocked, e.g. a connection may have come loose? Firstly, check all the external connections. If they appear to be alright you will have to look inside.

I would suggest checking all your connections inside the case. Make sure the PC is switched off and disconnected from the mains before opening the case.
I would check the connections to the hard drive 1st.
Here is a good site about checking your CMOS battery, but i don't think it is that. http://www.geocities.com/micksmix2000/cmosbatt.html
When this happened to me a while ago it was my processor, which is very rare. Normally its the motherboard that goes 1st. i bought a replacement processor off ebay, secondhand.

I would suggest taking it to a local repair shop if your not up to opening the case, the big name high street brands ar rather expenisve, especially if your processor or motherboard have gone, as the replacement cost for a MB or processor is alot on top of what they charge.
