Hi all, I would like to know,How can I tell if my set up is protected. I did not set the Router up myself. I was told the PW and the SSID but have never had to use them. Please don`t answer in Techy jargon. Thanks all.I might add that I have a Laptop connected and I just connect straight in. Regards.

Who's provided your internet for you and what router do you have?
Do you connect the laptop with a cable or not?

It should be set as standard as most ISP's do these days.
The password and SSID will be required if you want to access the web wirlessley, I assume you entered this for your laptop to access the web?
To check if wireless is enabled, type 192.168.0.1 into your browser to access the netgear page.

Mouse, Thanks for that but I can access the web, no trouble on both Laptop and Desktop I dont have to put a password in either. I just click on my browser Icon (firefox) and I am connected. Send and receive E Mails and everything. What I would like to know is, How can I tell if my WiFi is secure. ie will it be open to outsiders.

Can I clarify if you ever entered a password when you searched for an available wireless network from your laptop?
If you didn't, can you confirm that it's your wireless network that you are connected to?
If you are connected and you never entered your SSID and Password for the laptop to get online the first time you connected, then your network is unsecure.

Mouse, Thanks for last response. I am going to get in touch with the installer and get to know just what he has and has not done. He was a friend of a friend if you know what I mean and getting hold of him might be tricky. Ill call this resolved and come back if I have to.

Assuming you have XP, the easiest way to check is to right-click the wireless icon near the clock.
Seelect View Avaiable wireless netwroks.
If you know the SSID the look at your network and it will say "Unsecured" or "Secure" network.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!
