Belkin router and virgin broadband.
      #387676 - Mon Mar 10 2008 12:59 AM

Hi hope someone can help.

We were sold a Belkin wireless g+ mimo router to use with virgin broadband webstar modem . This modem has one usb connection and one ethernet connection. I explained I wanted to connect my desktop computer by usb cable and to continue using our broadband connection that way . My daughter wanted to then connect via her wireless enabled laptop. Up to now she has been plugging into the modem with an ethernet cable.

As soon as I tried to connect up I couldn't because the instructions said unplug the cable that connects your computer to the modem and plug it into the grey port at the back of the router. The connecting cable is a blue usb one. All the connections on the router are ethernet.

My computer has no ethernet ports and isn't able to get wireless.
Do I need a connector / adaptor or a card of some sort.
Went back to currys who couldn't advise or help.
Linda

First, you cannot use the USB connection on the VM modem at all. Virgin Media do not recommend it anyway and it won't work with a router. And no, you can't buy a router that will work via USB and you can't connect your PC to the USB port and the router to the ethernet port, that won't work either.

You first need to power down the VM modem, the router and the PC. By that I mean remove the power leads from all of them. Next, leave the Virgin modem connected to the Virgin cable port where it comes into the house and then connect the modem to the router using an ethernet cable (colour is immaterial). As your PC hasn't got an ethernet port you will need to buy one of these and install it in your PC. Once you've done that you can connect the router to your PC and then power up the modem first. Wait a couple of minutes then power up the router and then finally the PC. The ethernet card will install itself and you will be automatically connected to the net. You will need to uninstall the dial-up connection associated with the old VM USB installation.

Finally you can then log on to the router and set up your wireless security before your daughter connects to the router via wireless.

I am new here and have a very similar problem. Hope I'm choosing the right way to introduce my issue.
I have a laptop (XP2) and a desktop (vista) with WLAN installed that can connect wireless to my belkin 54g router but I would also like to connect another desktop (XP2) to the network. The desktop doesn't have plugging adapted for the Belkin's wire (such as telephon connection, I beleive this is the so-called "ethernet") I can only plug USB connection. I had a look at the mentionned Plexus 10/100/1000 Mbps Network Interface Card.
Is this what I also need to install and if yes how should I do it?
P.S> : I have belkin router adapter with USB connection but it doesn't seem to work, I have been trying for months and there is always problems : I keep getting error messages "WLanconfig.exe" and Belkin support could not help me, they think I should connect wired.
Tkx for help and advice.
