Ok my laptop has decided to disconnect from the internet every 40 minutes or so, what i have noticed is that when it disconnects a warning box comes up and says something like there is another computer with the same ip as the latop which i dont understand as theres only the laptop connected to the router, i resolve the problem of the laptop connecting to the internet by going into network connections and selecting the wireless router and choosing repair which renews the IP. Is there anything i can do to prevent it from happening, my router is a netgear wgr614uk,

Do you connect anything else, eg a desktop?
You need to make sure all your devices are set to receive an ip address from the router:
Go to Network Places > View Network Connections.
Right-click on the device that is connecting, eg wireless adapter and select Properties.
Scroll down the little box to TCP/IP and double-click.
Make sure it's selected to obtain an ip address automatically.

The ip conflict message usually appears when there's another computer on the network with the same ip address. Connect to the router settings page and look for LAN Clients, usually under Network, to see if there is anything else connected.

This may seem like a daft question, but are you only connected wireless or by ethernet?

The laptop is connected via wireless and the pc is hard wired to the router which is then wired to the modem and then to the outside world, ok i think ive found out why the laptop was disconnecting well its a theory, my brother decided today to connect to the router with his iphone and at the same time i tried to connect to the internet on the laptop and the laptop wuldnt connect due to my brothers iphone having the same IP address as the laptop, ive now got to work out how i change the IP address of either the laptop or iphone, could i do this via the router

You didn't mention the hadwired desktop or iPhone.
His iPhone needs setting to obtain an ip address automatically. The router won't give out the same address twice so something must be set with a static ip address.
