Newbie needing help...PC running slow

I'm new to all this so please be gentle! My PC is normally very good and i normally sweep it every week using Spybot and Ad-Aware and Norton Anti-Virus scans every Sunday but lately i have been getting links sent to me by my friends son...whilst trying to copy and paste it this evening however i caught it and i was directed to a site and altho i haven't actually done anything my PC seems to have somewhat slowed down since...also forgotten to mention...have recently defragged my hard drive too...as i thought this was the issue..

Hello GettinSlower

Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Viewpoint components are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components.

I would like to suggest uninstalling Viewpoint Manager using Add/Remove Programs

Click on: Start > Run and type in services.msc Click "OK"

In the Services window look for Viewpoint Manager Service

Select/highlight and right click the entry, and choose: Properties
On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button
Beside: Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Open HijackThis again, select "Do a System Scan only" and place a checkmark in the boxes before the following entries:

Close all other open windows and click on Fix checked, then exit HijackThis.

Hi there ourwilly,

What can i say...you're a genius...i got rid of Viewpoint and my laptop seemed to run sooooo much quicker...ran Hijack this and the only one i couldn't see was the viewpoint services one but i assumed this was because i had been into Services and disabled it..?

Have also updated my Java...thanks very much for the link...i never thought about lookin to see if my Java was out of date...and have read through the other hints and tips about keeping my system running well and have done a few of them already...

Thanks so much for your help...its very appreciated..
