PC acting Strangely! Please Advise
      #387364 - Fri Mar 07 2008 02:56 PM

Good Afternoon HJT Helpers,

My PC has developed a few strange glitches. Other People have access to my PC, so I have no clue whats happening or why. Thank you for any advice you can give me.

The problems are:

I notice my AVG & Adwatch icons have disappeared from the notification area.
I try to reboot or shutdown, but the desktop just refreshes. I then have to turn the PC off manually. When I switch it back on, all is fine. Also, when I switched on my PC today, all of my FFX bookmarks & history have disappeared

I ran a full AVG scan and it returned :

FILE; hosts RESULT/INFECTION; change
PATH; c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

The only new software on my PC is SpywareBlaster. I also upgraded my Spybot S&D. (This may be the 'change' that AVG mentions.

I am using XP Pro SP2

Madeline advised me to post a HJT log so here goes:

I notice you have winspy installed, did you install this ?

WinSpy 1.0 is a commercial spyware application that can find Internet activities and Windows activities as it records and logs keystrokes, the location bar history, cookies, Internet cache, Internet history, URLs in hidden index.dat file, recent documents history, Windows search files and computer history, start menu run history, and open/save dialog box history.

Hi Bricat. Yes, I installed this after the problems started, hoping to find out what websites were visited in my absence. How bad a move was that? Cheers Mugsy

I'm not a fan of these kind of programs, i can understand parental control programs but spying ???. it's underhand.
if other people are using your computer and you can't trust them, don't let them use it.

I don't see anything in the HJT log.

have you tried doing a system restore to a time before the problem started ?

How to Start and Use System Restore

To start System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

The first time you use System Restore, there are two options on the Welcome page:
• Restore my computer to an earlier time
• Create a restore point
2. Click Restore my computer to an earlier time and click Next.

A calendar appears.
3. In the calendar, choose which Restore Point to roll your system back to.(before your problems started)
4. Click Next.

You are prompted to close all applications before completing the Restore process because the computer will restart.
5. Upon completion of the restart, a confirmation screen appears. Click OK to continue using your computer.

Hi Bricat. Thanks for taking a look at my log. WinSpy was installed not as a means to spy on anybody, but because I was informed that it would give me a list of sites visited.

People are free to use the PC, as long as they use SiteAdvisor as their guide.

Winspy was just a tool to help me try to get to the bottom of this. I probably don't want to know what sites my missus has visited!!!!

The problem seems to have gone away as quickly as it appeared, but I will do the System Restore, and see what happens. If that fails I have a ghost of my HDD thats about 4 weeks old.

Thanks for your time, Mugsy
