IE has encountered a problem

All of a sudden am i getting a nag screen from Microsoft stating that 'IE has encountered a problem and needs to close' when trying to connect to certain web sites on both my PC and my laptop. If it's of any help the last error Signature is: -
AppName:iexplore.exe; ModVer: 5.1.2600.3119; AppVer: 7.0.6000.16608; ModName: kernel32dll; Offset: 00012a5b
Both machines operate on XP Home Edition
Any help would be appreciated.

If it's the same web site on two different machines that suggests to me the problem lies with the web site, not your PCs.

Hi greysts
The problem occurs on different web sites on different machines. The only commonality is Windows XP, AVG and Spybot.

Yep, i'm on automatic update.
One thing i have noticed recently is that when i log off my user account, a nag screen comes up with DWWIN.EXE DLL INITIALISATION FAILED also a sometimes a nag screen comes up with SYSFADER and this asks if i want to close it, which i do each time and then the PC logs off.

dwwin.exe is part of the Dr Watson package provided by Microsoft and sysfader is part of the programme that controls XP visual effects. Sounds to me as if you've got some problems with the basic Microsoft XP installation. Try running sfc /scannow from a command prompt and see what happens.

Try running sfc /scannow from a command prompt and see what happens? How do i do that?

Hi greysts
Ignore my last post i've sussed that out now, but is asking me to insert Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD but i'm working on Windows XP Home!!!!!
I had my HD replaced 6 months ago and they installed Windows XP Professional by mistake and i have since reinstalled Windows XP Home so that i could receive automatic updates.
What should i do now?

Typically with this error you have to change the word 'Professional' to 'Home' in a couple of files. Have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=897128

Hi greysts
With help from BurrWalnut, I've changed "Professional" to "Home" in the Fp40ext.inf file, but on checking Ims.inf file there were no instances of "Professional" to change.
On trying to run 'sfc /scannow' it now asks me to insert Windows XP Home Service Pack 2 CD, which i have done but the nag screen still asks me to insert the CD.
When the CD is inserted a blue welcome screen appears with a list of 'What do you want to do?': -
1 - Install Windows XP
2 - Lean more about the set up procedure
3 - Install optional windows components
4 - Perform additional tasks
5 - Check system compatibility
Is there a need to click on one of the above?

Before running sfc again, try resetting IE7 settings, i.e. Internet Options > Advanced Tab and click 'Reset' at the bottom.

Run sfc and if you get the windows options that you listed above it’s because the CD has loaded, just close it.

If that doesn’t work, try the sfc again but read this about the CD. The new SP2 CD message is related to the XP Pro message you received earlier, read this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900910

Thanks for that but before i start messing about with settings why is the same thing referred to in my original post happening on my PC and also on my laptop?

In Internet Options > Advanced Tab > Reset it says that you should only use this if your browser is in an unusable state; my browser is in a usable state!

Also please note that i am not cumputer literate and i am concerned that what i am doing will upset an already working PC.

I responded to your query regarding ‘sfc’ as I knew the answer. Here is a list of things to try. None of them will harm your computer and, at worst you may lose a few Add-ons, which are simple to reinstall.

Alternatively, you can completely disregard this post and do nothing at all.

1. The first thing to do when IE7 is playing up, is to reset it, i.e. Internet Options > Advanced Tab and click 'Reset' at the bottom. You may want to read this first http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 and here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926449/en-us and Internet Explorer stops responding, stops working, or restarts http://support.microsoft.com/gp/pc_ie_intro

2. Check the Add-ons here http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

3. The system file checker (SFC) ensures the integrity of the Windows system files by checking them. If there are any anomalies, it copies them from either the CD or a folder on the hard disk. It can take a little while to run. If you want to try it, go to Start > Run and type “sfc /scannow” (not the quotes but the space) and have your WinXP CD ready to put in the drive, should it be wanted. If the XP CD loads the main Windows set-up menu and covers the progress bar (as yours did), just close it. SFC will exit with no closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, were replaced look in Event Viewer.

During the running of SFC, you may be prompted to insert a Windows XP Pro CD. It involves changing the word 'Professional' to 'Home' in two files; Fp40ext.inf and Ims.inf. I've finally got round to doing resets in IE7 and the nag screens that kept appearing do not now appear when using the web sites in question.

I still cannot get SFC to work so I'll sort the that problem out another time.
