advice from computer veterans
      #386727 - Sun Mar 02 2008 04:50 PM

Please forgive any errors and for asking the obvious - I am new to the world of IT (over 50!!).I would welcome any feedback whether it is a direct, indirect or just tangential to the issue involved.
On the 27 dec last I purchased a laptop from Comet.I became the proud owner of the following product ASPIRE MODEL 5633WLMi preloaded with vista home premium.I did not get my broadband connection until 16 jan 2008 and the problem started the first time I tried to connect using an ethernet cable.Whenever I try to get internet access I have to spend upto 10 mins "fiddling" with the cable and the the ethernet connection on the laptop.I have tried a number of other suitable cables with no success.I only discovered where I believe the problem lies last week when I had become frustrated to such an extent that I almost resorted to violence (luckily I could not find my hammer). What i had previously missed was the fact that there was a "click"when I connected the cable to the router. This does not happen with the laptop connection and the slightest knock will cause a disconnection. The only conclusion I can make is that this is a design fault on the aspire. My inference has been supported in respect that frieds have told me that I should not be having this problem.I wonder if anyone else has this model and if so have they had the same problem and how was it put right.I may be overlooking something obvious - indeed I hope I am because unless it can be solved I will need to send the product back to the manufacturers or the retailers. And that will result in me being computerless fot at least 2 weeks (and 2 weeks of wasted subscription to my ISP)Any help, advice comments and suggestions would be welcome.

Welsome to the Forum
Most of us are over 50 too
To Business
A common mistake is mixing the telephone cable with an Ethenet cable The Ethernet is normally coloured Yellow and it is thick

UM...Have you Fitted it upside down and Broken the Tag? Should slot in smoothly (with a click) Replacements are cheap (even seen them in Poundland )

Try another router socket too. Check that too for orientation

BTW Have you ever got a connection with that computer yet? If the set up has b been done, Open Internet Explorer and see if anything is Displaying cuch as Google or MSN?

Let's get a few things clear first. Ethernet cables are NOT normally yellow. They can be any colour. Telephone cables and ethernet cables are not interchangeable. If the cable you are using fits with a click in the router then it clearly is an ethernet cable, not a telephone cable.

Does your laptop have two ports that look similar but of slightly different size? The ethernet port will have a small graphic that represents two TV screens linked together by wire. The telephone port will have a small graphic of a telephone handset next to it. What have you got?
