Task Manager

I am using Windows XP and my computer seems to be constantly running something in the background. I have checked with Task Manager and find that there are no applications running, but there are a great many processes running. Does anyone know how I identify what all of these processes are so that I can shut down what I don't need and stop the constantly irritating noise of the hard drive?

joerow , with all known running programs closed down , when you open the task manager what percentage is the CPU usage showing.
