Windows XP Updates
      #386076 - Mon Feb 25 2008 07:17 PM

Hi All
This subject has obviously been discussed many times before. I've done a search to no avail. Microsoft keep telling me that updates are available. I've tried to download them but it keeps asking me to insert my Office Professional CD and I'm on Student and Teacher Edition 2003. I've tried with and without using this CD and it fails to download the updates each time. I've checked Microsoft Updates / Review Your Update History and Error Code: 0x8024002D is shown in the status info. Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
JONTHY

I’m putting together a little dossier of Microsoft update problems and can offer you this choice of solutions. None, one or more than one of these may work. Read through my links and select those most likely to solve your problem.

1. Repeatedly offered updates, have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910339

2. Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation, have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

3. This may fix some problems with Windows Update but it will erase your history as shown on the Windows Update Site because the update folder is effectively removed, which may or may not be important to you:
a. Stop the Automatic Updates service via Administrative Tools > Services.
b. Now rename the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistributionOLD.
c. Start the Automatic Updates service via Administrative Tools > Services.
d. Try Windows Update again.

4. If you cannot download/update using windows update, this does help in some cases:
Go to Internet Options > Security Tab, click 'Trusted sites' icon, click Sites then uncheck 'Require server verification'. Now add these 2 sites http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com and http://*.windowsupdate.com.
Click Close, Apply and OK. Alternatively, look here for specific error messages http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/ph/6527/

5. I haven’t tried it but Dial-a-fix is a highly regarded program, here http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

6. It could be the firewall is blocking the download otherwise have a look here if the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) service gets corrupted http://www.botmanfamily.net/~aurelien/articles/bits-reinstall.shtml or have a look here if nothing is downloaded and ’Done’ appears in the bottom left corner http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...;displaylang=en

7. Net Framework updates not downloading and/or Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error code "1603". Have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100

Good luck.

Hi BurrWalnut
Thanks for that. I started to work through your list of solutions and 1 & 2 did not fit the bill. In 3 I couldn't find out how to rename the Administrative Tools > Services! I tried your advice in item 4 and that made no difference. Phew! I then remembered that I had the HD replace 4 months ago and on checking i've now found that Office Professional has been installed and not Student and Teacher Edition. Now, how do i remove Office Professional and install Student and Teacher Edition? Do i just uninstall Office Professional and then install Student and Teacher Edition? If i remove Office Professional and reinstall Student and Teacher will my Outlook data be still available because i rely heavily on Outlook to run my Life?
Many thanks in anticipation.

In 3, you should have stopped the service then renamed the folder. Never mind, here is how to export/import or backup the .pst file, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287070
