My PC, which was given to me about 8 months ago from my son,is about 5 yrs old. It runs XP and until Christmas, I used IE6. A microsoft pop-up told me I could install IE7 which I did, but I wasn't too happy with it, so I installed Firefox. In my opinion it ran quicker and appeared clearer and fresher.
Of late though, my system has become sluggish. It takes about four minutes to get going,
Recently after doing endless searches for something, I failed to notice my McAfee Site Advisor turn RED. Somewhere along the way, I picked up a Fraud XP AntiVirus package plus a few more things. These have new been totally cleared by an IT guy. However he has pointed out to me that no-one else would use a machine this slow and suggests I consider the following:_
extra memory or clear hard drive or invest in new tower or new system.
I am quite happy with my flat screen/mouse & keyboard. Maybe someone would care to offer an opinion. My uses of the computer are fairly plain. Daily surfing, emails, photography, word.

Ah !!! but have they. I would make that a starting point. Post a hijacklog to determine if your pc is indeed clean before even thinking about upgrading. As you say your pc ran all right before so somethings at the root of it.

My second computer will be 6 years old this month. Does not have the specs of the newer one yet with regular maintainance, cleanup/defrag etc it still serves me well. A bit slow on bootup but that's to be expected with age I suppose.
Maybe your man sees a business opportunity here so follow FifeFlyer's advice first before making any decision on buying.
