Hi all, in the past week, my PC has developed a problem. It has now happened for the 4th time. :
I notice my AVG & Adwatch icons have disappeared from the notification area. I try to reboot or shutdown, but the desktop just refreshes. I then have to turn the PC off manually. When I switch it back on, all is fine. The PC appears to be fine except for this.
I ran a full AVG scan and it returned :
FILE; hosts RESULT/INFECTION; change PATH; c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
The only new software on my PC is SpywareBlaster.
I am using XP Pro SP2
Any ideas?
Cheers Mugsy

Sorry, I forgot, I updated my SpyBot S&D yesterday, that could be the change reported by AVG. The disappearing icons & No Shutdown had occured 3 times before this.
Any help appreciated, TVM Mugsy

I don't think that the new versions of or updates to Spybot and SpywareBlaster would have caused your problem. It might be worth your while to post a log for analysis in the Hijack This forum to see if there's anything on your PC that shouldn't be there.

Thanks Madeline......I thought this might end up on the HJT forum!!!
Firstly tho, I have a good ghost image on my pod, so i'll try that. If that doesn't sort it out then I'll have to post a log...
I suppose this is what happens when other people use your PC, and I've got no doubt that they were visiting Frankie Vaughan.
I'll give the ghost a try, and see what happens.
Thank you for your time Madeline....Cheers Mugsy

It could be worth trying a System Restore back to a point before this happened, but it may not solve your problem. If it does, you'll probably lose anything you've downloaded and/or installed after the time of the restore point. So if SR works, crate a new restore point and re-download any programs/updates you've lost and reinstall them. If there are several updates, it might be worth installing just one and wait to see if the problem returns; if it doesn't, do another one and so on. That way, you might be able to pinpoint the cause of the trouble. If SR doesn't work in the first place, you might as well undo it and try HJT!

Hi Madeline, I decided to leave the system restore or reformat, and instead opt for posting a HJT log,( As you suggested!)
I really would like to find out what is causing this. Thank you for all of your time, in other logs as well as this. It is very much appreciated. Cheers Mugsy
