Can you set Hotmail to use FF as default browser?
      #385759 - Fri Feb 22 2008 11:37 PM

Hi All, everything web related I open opens in FF. FF is set as my default browser. When I open up Hotmail from MS IM it opens in ie7. I an guessing that this is a tie-in betweeen Hotmail & MSN IM. I use FF for EVERYTHING except this, AdWatch doesn't like it either, as it is expecting FF Can it be set up to open in FF? Cheers Mugsy

Firefox is my default browser too, but I get the same thing if I access Hotmail via Windows Live Messenger, formerly MSN Messenger, and I don't think this can be changed. However, I usually go to my Hotmail account in Firefox without any real difficulty. Try using one of the following to access your Hotmail account in Firefox:
https://login.live.com
or
https://msnia.login.live.com
If one of these works for you, bookmark it and use it if that's satisfactory to you. Some people who use Firefox, including me, find that the live login page claims that either your e-mail address or password is incorrect, but entering your password a 2nd time sorts this.
If you have any trouble getting to your Hotmail in Firefox, try using one of the above links using the IE Tab extension which should work. It will open the site using the IE rendering engine, but still within the Firefox browser, so you don't have IE open separately. This extension is also useful for displaying any site that doesn't work properly in FF.
I hope something I've said will be helpful to you.

Thanks for the reply Madeline. I already have it bookmarked in FF, just hoping I could have done it straight from MSN IM. Looks like it's not to be tho Thanks for your time anyway. Cheers Mugsy.

You're welcome. It's never really bothered me much as I don't use Messenger very often. Links from Outlook Express always open in Firefox though, it's tiresome that you can do one of these things in FF and not the other.

Hi Madeline...When I clicked on the messenger plus link, my SiteAdvisor turned red. When I viewed the report it had 12 red downloads, including trojans. ( Although the user reviews were all good). Is this safe or is SA just being picky. Cheers Mugsy

I know Madeline was showing that the article gives a workaround by using Messenger Plus! and A.N.Other, but Messenger Plus!, if not installed correctly, can give you the LOP infection, for instance, hence the reason why it states:

"Messenger Plus! contains optional sponsorware. If you do not wish to install this sponsorware, make sure you do not tick the box during installation!"

It's just not worth the hassle. You'd be best to open Hotmail via the FF links Madeline quoted above.

Thank you Madeline & Caroline. I will just leave things as they are! Sometimes, I think I am probably trying to tweak my PC just a bit too far!! Oh well, sometimes learning how not to do something is as good as learning how to do something...

So did my SiteAdvisor! It's difficult to be certain whether or not the McAfee report is up to date*, but it's probably better to be safe than sorry. Personally, I wouldn't risk those plugins myself, partly because I don't want to invite malware onto my machine and partly because I'm happy getting my Live Hotmail the way I already do through Firefox.
*I said that about McAfee SiteAdvisor because a couple of sites I visit regularly were red-flagged and members felt this was wrong; after a lot of pestering for McAfee to re-evaluate the sited, one was changed to green, the other to yellow. This isn't intended as a criticism of McAfee, things change and they can't possibly review all the sites they cover in a small amount of time. I don't know how up to date SiteAdvisor was when McAfee acquired it from the original developers, at least MAfee changed their reports for the 2 sites I mentioned (after a bit of nagging), so all credit to them for that.
It could be the case that those 2 plugins are perfectly safe now, but is it worth the risk to find out? Probably not.
