cd/dvd drive not working
      #385593 - Thu Feb 21 2008 07:49 PM

Need some help with a friends cd/dvd drive.

The computer is an advent 7111 laptop about 1.5 years old,When you try and run a disc it just clicks and makes a couple of other noises, when you click on the drive it says there is no disc inserted, she tried uninstalling the drive then rebooting and letting windows reinstall it,no difference.

So what she needs to know is,

A,is the drive faulty,beyond repair

and

B,which makes of drive are good and which are bad,and would any slimline drive fit in her laptop drive bay.

Any recommendations or info would be good.

Cheers.

Chris.

Hi Chris.....I'm deffo no techie, but seeing as nobody else seems to have answered, 2 things spring to mind....First, have a look in the device manager and make sure you have no yellow exclamation marks next to anything. If there is, then it's a driver issue. If not , then probably the hardware. Next is the disc, is it clean in itself...yeah? ...Then Run a GOOD cd cleaning system thru the cd drive (Sorry, Don't know of any, but they can be picked up on high street) If these 2 suggestions don't help, then it's probably beyond me.

Thanks for the reply,as far as i know there is no driver issues and she has run a cleaning disc through the drive and it happens on all disc's inserted,so can only presume the drive is dead, beyond repair. Thanks for the advise any way.

Chris.

Sorry I couldn't be more help Chris. At least when the guys who do know how to fix it come along, they've eliminated 2 issues!?!?! You say as far as you know there are no driver issues. Has she gone into device manager & Checked? (Start >> Control Panel >> System >> Hardware >> Device Manager.) Look for yellow warning signs. Driver issues don't always jump out at you, seem to wait until you need them... If that doesn't help then I'm pretty much out of ideas. Is nothing happening at all, or is it telling you cd/dvd drive not found. If you type the words ' cd/dvd drive not working' into google it comes up with all sorts. Have a poke around there, will probably find a page relating to your problem. Google & Webuser, between them, you'll get there!!!

I have same laptop, Advent 7111, bought 1.5 years ago, and have some of same problems.

It will read and write to a cd, no problem, and appears to write to a dvd, including verify, but when I try to look for what is copied, the disk seems blank? It plays pre-recorded dvds fine.

I know dvd writers are very picky about some named dvd's so will try other makes to see if that is the problem.
