I have been trying to install the same update for over a week. It involves Microsoft NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack. It appears to be downloading from Microsoft Update but never installs. Furthermore it freezes the whole system, which requires rebooting. The Failure Code seems to be Ox800706BE. A Google search on that came up with PRC_S_CALL_FAILED, but I have no idea what this means. Can anyone solve this problem? Layman's terms please. Many thanks.

As a follow on from the above, I tried an American programme called RegSweep to try to identify problem. Whilst downloading it,it stated that something on my machine was currently suspended and did I want to override this. Instead of noting the particulars of the "suspended" item, I clicked Yes and Regsweep swung into action. Having found "hundreds of errors" in my Registry, I then found RegSweep was not a freebie and for it to remedy matters involved a substantial purchase. Having clicked off and uninstalled it, I am back to square one as far as downloading the necessary upgrade to the Service Pack ie it wont install ! Help still required.

First of all a registry sweep , or any other sweep for that matter , ain't gonna solve this problem.

Now there's a surprise Although you'll likely have a few registry errors , we all do , you'll find this is a marketing ploy to get you to buy the product.
Net framework problems such as your's are very common , in fact we had a similar one to yours on the forum the other day ,which was successfully solved. There's never a guarantee however so before i suggest the same fix ( it means a bit of uninstalling ) could you check the error code please. Don't know how you got the error code , but if you could double check by going to windows updates........open Internet Explorer click on tools > windows updates. In the left hand pane click on "review your update history" and look for the failed update in the list. Click on the red cross and a screen will appear with an error code. ( apologies if you've already done but need to be sure ).

Fife Flyer - thanks for coming back to me, another Fifer coincidentally. I have done as you suggested. I find I have tried to install this particular service pack approx 15 times over the last 10 days ( it was first notified to me on 12/2/08) All failures have quoted the same Failure Code viz Ox800706BE bar 2 out of the most recent attempts which have quoted Ox643. In trying to remedy matters this pm, I thought I would try System Restore. The previous date to today it was offering was 16/2/08. As I thought that was probably after the date the problem occurred, I tried to go back to an earlier date. Clicking on the tab on the calendar for January had no response. Nevertheless, I did a system restore for 16/2/08. This seemed to work OK and I got the screen which confirmed I had restored my system to that of 16/2/08. When I went back into System Restore however, it showed the current restore point as today and 16/2/08 wasn't even highlighted as a possible alternative.Again I couldn't get back to January. Whatever is going on has me beat. I picked up 2 virus threats last week ( probably from a porn site) but AVG seemed to pick them up and I transferred them into the virus vault as instructed. Nothing else seems to be amiss. Before I twigged the Windows Update problem, I did a HiJack This scan last week which was given the all clear on this forum. Your help would be appreciated. Cheers.

That's the code i was looking for. Like i said your problem is common and the net is littered with people with the same failed updates.
Follow the instructions in.... this post.
Works for most people but no guarantee's I'm afraid. Let us know how it goes or , if you need any more help or clarification , just ask.
Oh!!!! and before trying the fix it may be prudent to create a new restore point first.

See , it's not true what they say about "tight Fifers" .
Pleased you're sorted.
Just to add , looking at your system restore problem , you said "Clicking on the tab on the calendar for January had no response" . Were these dates highlighted in bold blue ? ( clicking on them will show what caused the restore point to be made , in the right hand panel ) If they're not in bold they're not restore points.
Once again i apologize if you are aware of this , I'm not trying to be smart it's just that i don't you're level of computing .

Fife Flyer Quite agree about Fifer's tightness, but the exception is your brother in the KUSI on a Sunday night!
