Running on battery
      #385215 - Tue Feb 19 2008 04:54 PM

As I have recently purchased an Acer Aspire 3680 (and run Vista basic) I like to keep it running all the time and connected to the Internet via Broadband. We all know that the batteries on a laptop don`t last too long so my query is, if by leaving it connected to the mains all the time am I damaging the battery in any way?

It should be possible for you to remove the battery completely from your laptop and run on mains alone. Unfortunately that won't help you because even sitting on a shelf doing nothing the battery will eventually die. Leaving it in the laptop won't make it any better (or worse) it will still have a limited life of around 15 to 24 months.

Many thanks for the reply
Its an idea to remove the battery plus run it off the mains when the battery throws its hand in.
Thanks

I used my laptop in the same way and my hp's battery died after only 3 months of use.

My Dell Inspiron is still going strong after six months, but I don`t leave it connected to the mains ALL the time.I make sure I let the battery discharge at least twice a week and whenever it is not in use I either put the laptop to sleep,or if I know I won`t be using it for a while,I shut it down.
The last time I took it off the mains and checked to see how long I had left on the battery it read four and a half hours!Of course that reduces the more you do,but I generally get at least three hours easily.

However, I can't say exactly if this was the only cause or it was also a manufacturing problem.
