Hi
I wonder if any of you techy guys can help!
I have a Time 7321 laptop ("stop laughing in the back there") that I wish to give to my 11 year old son as a first laptop, Ive had this for about 4 years and it has been trouble free lucky me some say.
It has now started to slow down quite noticabely now whilst loading programes with it only having 256mb memory so i wish to reset it back to its factory default settings before passing it on to him.
I know that data will be lost but all necessary items have been saved, as when first purchased I had to reset it a couple of times, but unfortunately as time has gone on I have forgotten how to reset it.
I have tried the disks but as I say for the life of me I can't remember the procedure of how to to do it and as usual the owners manual can't be found and if I remember they didn't tell you how to anyway!
I have the 3 discs that came with the laptop: disk 1 of 2 & 2 of 2, also the notebook XP driver cd version 4 along with a floppy disk marked ME,XP notebook boot disk.
I would be most grateful if you could help

This is the theory! Place the floppy disk in the drive and reboot the laptop. At some point it should either read the data from a protected part of the hard disk or ask you to insert the relevant CD. It should then rebuild everything from scratch. You will probably need to use the driver CD at some point if the Recovery system hasn't got them built in. Finally you will need to log on to Microsoft and download the HUGE number of updates that you'll need.
On the other hand, it might seem slow to you but would it do for your son 'as is'? He might be quite satisfied to use it straight away.

Hi Greysts
Thanks for the reply it was my son who said it was slow and I have to agree with him that it is.
Anyway I inserted the floppy disk and re-booted it off she went but stopped on the DOS screen after several seconds with the following showing:
No Bootable cd in atapi cd-rom booting from removable media staring windows millenium emergency boot..
This driver is provided by oak technology, inc.. 0TI-91X atapi cd-rom device driver, revD91XV352 (C)copyright oak technology, inc 1987-1997 device name : cdrom transfer : programmed I/0
A:\1h MSCDEX /d:cdrom /L:X MSCDEX VERSION 2.25 copyright (c) microsoft corp. 1986-1995 Drive X:= driver cdrom unit 0
A:\>x: x:\>restore
cdr101: not ready reading drive x abort, retry, fail.
Any ideas as to what is the potential issue here or how to resolve it so that it can continue to do the default restore.
Regards. Gazzataf

That helped no end. The error message is telling you that it wants the CD in the drive as well so put both the floppy and the CD in their respective drives and then reboot.

Hi
Sorry if I had put this in the wrong thread, I looked at the other Windows xp threads for help! ... I have been working nights and have not had time to do anything to the laptop until today when the restore prob occured so I appologise.
(Todays original thread) I have a time 7321 laptop with XP that has been very realiable up till now? which im hoping to give to my son as a first computer if i ever get it to work again!
Anyway my problem is I have just tried to restore it back to manuf default prior to giving it to him. I placed the xp boot disk & disk 1 of 2 as per greysts moderators instruction (other disks for the laptop are, disk 2 of 2 & notebook XP driver cd version 4) in the laptop and followed the on screen data loss acceptance procedure (I've saved all what I need) and all was going well for a minute, or so I thought.
The Screen displayed the following:- No bootable cd in ATAPI CD-ROM Booting from removable media starting...
A:\>
"A" prompt just sits there flashing! I've rebooted several times and this is all it does.
I have re-stored it many times in the past but have not used it very much for a couple of years and have never came across this problem before whilst re-storing it, so i'm a little bit at aloss as to what to do next.
Any step by step ideas guys of how to get this back to a working laptop for my son would be gratefully appreciated!

Have you tried just the CD in the drive and then rebooting?

I have tried using all 3 disks as mentioned without bootup floppy inserted all that is coming up is: No bootable cd in atapi hardisk boot sector invalid press 'H' to retry hardisk, any other key for floppy
Kept pressing it but to no avail!
Put floppy back in and it went back through the procedure that I mentioned in the earlier thread again stopping at the flashing 'A' prompt
any ideas! Gazzataf

With the A: prompt showing type D: and press the enter key. That should get you to the directory of the CD. Type DIR and press enter. What do you get?

I have done what you said and typed A:\D but all that is happening when typing in and pressing enter is "Bad command or file name". I have tried other drive letters but to no avail.
When I press A:\dir the following appear: EGA2,EGA3,KEYB,KEYBOARD,KEYBRD2,KEYBRD3,MODE,COMMAND,DISPLAY,AUTOEXEC,CONFIG
I can't seem to go any further than this!
any ideas! Regards

Did you actually type in Quote:
A:\D
If so it won't work. All you need to type is D: then press the Enter key.

Hi Greysts
yep typed following various combinations at A:\ lower case d that came up as bad command or file name. lower case d: invalid drive specification. Capitol D bad command or file name. When I tried to type Capitol D: it would not let me, only the following would happen Capitol D+ for some reason turning on the capitol button would not let me put the (can't remember what you call these) : in front.
infact when I went back to try to type at A:\Dir the keyboard letter 'i' turned out to be a 5 instead, so became A:\D5r if you see what I mean.
sorry if this all sounds a bit peculiar but i'm in the dark here as I have never came across this before whilst restoring it. I just want to give it to my son.
hope you can help Regards

Quote:
lower case d: invalid drive specification
That's the clue. Typing it that way is correct it's just the wrong drive letter. Try C: or E: (upper or lower case is immaterial).
If that doesn't work, when you load the floppy disk do you see any messages about loading MSCDEC or something similar?

Hi Greysts
I have typed nearly most of the alphabet for the drive but to no avail, all it keeps coming up with as mentioned earlier "Bad command or file name" nothing comes up about MSCDEC or something similar at all.

Go all the way back up this thread and you will see this Quote:
No Bootable cd in atapi cd-rom booting from removable media staring windows millenium emergency boot..

A:\>x: x:\>restore
cdr101: not ready reading drive x abort, retry, fail.
Lots of things about MSCDEX and the fact that it has named the CD drive X: Did you try X?

Hi Greysts
I have been placing the floppy boot disk in whilst booting up, as I have been doing through out this process with the restore disk 1 in cd rom and when I have left it out.
As I said in the earlier comment that I cannot see anything now about MSCDEX, and come to mention nothing now from the very beginning about the original floppy disk content, for some reason all that is showing is what I say below. Maybe do you think the floppy is corrupted for some reason?? if so how would I go about fixing the boot disk back to its original state to be able to get me started to restore.
The Screen displayed the following:-
No bootable cd in ATAPI CD-ROM Hard disk boot sector invalid Press 'H' to retry hard disk any other key for floppy Non system disk -- insert boot disk and press any key Booting from removable media starting...
A:\> A:\> -(flashing prompt)
Again when I type DIR at the 'A'prompt & press ENTER the following appear: EGA2,EGA3,KEYB,KEYBOARD,KEYBRD2,KEYBRD3,MODE,COMMAND,DISPLAY,AUTOEXEC,CONFIG what is does this all mean.
Sorry to sound frustrated but just want to get it back to man/default status!

Basically, if the PC won't boot from the CD then either the CD is corrupted or your CD drive is busted. Can you try to boot a different PC with your CD in the drive and see if it will fire up? Clearly, don't take it any further than that as we don't want to install it on a good PC.

Hi again
I have tried my XP Prof disk from my desktop in the laptop and she started to whirl away right up to the point of install where I stopped, it was just for a trial purpose to see if the cd rom was working which I presume it must be as it seemed to boot to it.
I then tried the disk 1 in my desktop to see if that worked and all restore points and the associated items where on the disk and could be read by my desktop.
So I am no further forward than that really; its as if the restore disk needs a boot disk to be able to start it to run. as I mentioned earlier I can't see anything now relating to the boot disk floppy drive from the start of this threads mention:- e.g. (original disk info below)
This driver is provided by oak technology, inc.. 0TI-91X atapi cd-rom device driver, revD91XV352 (C)copyright oak technology, inc 1987-1997 device name : cdrom transfer : programmed I/0
