Hello all groovers, Being an absolute virgin in this area, I have a couple of questions. Firstly, I am on dial up ( yes we still exist), is it a waste of time even considering trying to download music in the first place? If not where, what, who and how is the best, safest option. Many thanks for any advice on this.

I don't download so can't offer you a 'Best Buy' so to speak, but as far as using dial up is concerned, yes you can do it. It will obviously be slower and you will be on line longer so the issue must be, are you on a Pay As You Go connection or a monthly contract?
If PAYG you will need to compare the cost of actually buying the CD you want against the cost of your telephone call. If it's contract, do you have any sort of limit on the amount of data you can download?
Finally, how reliable is your connection? If it's forever breaking down you will need to consider some sort of download manager that will pick up the connection again from where it left of.

Hi Greysts, Many thanks for your reply. I have a monthly contract of 30 hours online (so roughly an hour a day ). The connection is very slow and as you say, not that reliable. At 53kbps how long would one song take to download? The problem is that I tend not to be a whole CD lover but prefer individual tracks and it seems as you say that this may be an expensive option. Many thanks for your help and advice.

You need someone who actually downloads music to give you the answer to that. Anyone out there?

If I remember correctly, when I used to be on dial-up an average 3minute song would take anything from 10 - 20 minutes to download at 53kbps but this was a few years ago now so not 100% sure. Hope this helps!

Many thanks you guys, Tried a couple and it did indeed take from 15-30 minutes depending on ?????. I tried Limewire for this but was a little put off by the fact that all the lists seemed to include one that was titled "cute girl having orgasm", now was that Cliff Richard or the Sex pistols? http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif laugh Many thanks for all your help
