Ello there :-)

My 2 bobs worth....

Easy navigation which is good but the background is a bit of an eyesore. Try something a little plainer or something without so much detail as it makes the text a little difficult to read.

Many links (Particularlly on the badges page) seem to navigate AWAY from your site. Have the link open in a new window so that people still remain at your site while lookking at others.

There is a mailing list option which covers a large chunk of the text at the bottom of the page.

The links on the pages are light blue and on a light background, many visitors may find them hard to read.

Thats the criticism from me :-)
The sites contents is great and informative and navigation simple but I think you might want to think about changing the layut a little?

I tend to alter the background as and when I update it for variety and that was the last one I found which I quite liked, I'm still trying to find just the right one?? Any suggestions are appreciated.

The links direct you away for the badges as these go to Scoutbase.org.co.uk which is the national Scout Website and has all the requirements for the badges therefore it saves me making them up and also saves me using space for that and so can include more activity photos etc

Was the mailing list a problem with text as I included this as there seemed to be a lot of confusion regarding how to set one up?? would this be better laid out differently or put somewhere else??

thanks for the reply though a few odeas from other people are always helpful

All I would suggest is; where there's text keep the background plain and high contrast - i.e. black on white, white on black (though that's only advuisable for small blocks of text, not whole pages, IMO), yellow on blue, blue on yellow, etc.

As for variety, don't change the design and layout unless absolutely necessary once you've settled on something that works. Regular visitors need familiarity, when it comes to variety that's where regular new content comes in to play - and regular doesn't have to be daily, or weekly, or monthly, just regular, frequent.

What I mean about the link leading away from your site is that when you click it, it goes to the OTHER site you mentioned. Therefor closing your site as it does so.

Have it so that when people click the link, it opens the new sitw in a NEW window.
That way your site AND the new site are open.

The mailing list thing... I don't know if it is just my screen but the box covered a load of text.
It is as if the mailing list box has be placed on top of the other text?

I agree with TFC... use a plain background for better results and as he also mentioned, the contrast :-)

Like you, I also run a Scout website. Our site is very text heavy too. However I have made the main index page much easier on the eye using tables.

Perhaps have a look at my site and see if you get any ideas?

Just trying to help so please don't take offence to any feedback I leave.

Background image is a no no, too much of an eyesore and makes it hard to read the text.

Images are blurry.

Far too many navigation links on the left hand side. Try to group relevant topics together and create secondary navigation.

Too many links at the bottom of page too.

Text size varies from page to page. Try to keep text size consistent throughout the site. Text size on some pages is way too small..... to hard to read.
