Reading emails on server
      #383757 - Mon Feb 11 2008 09:57 AM

Can you preview emails without actually downloading them into your mail programme? I am looking for a FREE utility that will support multiple email accounts (POP3, IMAP, Hotmail & AOL). I know that Mail Washer Pro will do the job but is there a FREE alternative? Any advice much appreciated.

Just go to your ISP providers Web Mail page, login and view and or delete.
If you use Hotmail or another Web based account, go to their page, login and do the same.

Thanks Fusion but I can't see how I can open/read the emails whilst they are on the server which is what I'm after. If I open unwanted mail with my mail handler on my PC the damage is done. Am I missing something?

Doing as I suggest opens/reads them on the server and allows you to delete them on the server before you download them to your email client.

PopTray and Pop Peeper are alternative ways of doing it. Hope that helps.

Thanks for input abbafan. I notice that you are using Thunderbird. I have tried (many times) to configure my Googlemail account with Thunderbird but fail time and again. I get error messages like server not found, wrong address, etc. Can you help? I have enabled POP in Gmail settings and checked every single entry to no avail. I have even done, for the experts, screenshots of my configuration pages and still no joy. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'll help if I can.

In Thunderbird, go to Tools > account settings > add account. There is an option on there to add a Googlemail account. Assuming you are using the latest version.

Here are my settings though, incoming server name:- pop.googlemail.com, username:- full email address, Port:-995. SSL should be checked, but use secure authentication unticked.

Hope that helps you.

Still no joy. I've carefully followed your instructions and changed from TLS to SSL but still doesn't work.

BINGO!!! A re-start did the trick and Thunderbird is now working with Googlemail. One more thing, on From when I click on the arrow on the right of the bar a list of email addresses is displayed. How can I delete some of them? Many thanks for your help. Much appreciated. Regards.

Glad it's working now. You will have more than one address displayed if you have Thunderbird set up to use multiple accounts.

You can delete them from Tools > account settings, highlight the name of the account on the left hand side and click delete account at the bottom, but of course all your account settings will be gone. If you just use one email address to send, then just highlight the one you want in the Tools menu again and click "set as default", so you won't need to remember to change it everytime you send an email.

Thunderbird can be hard to get to grips with at first, but once you get into it, it's really good and I would never use anything else.

Be sure to let use know how you get on.

One of the old Google accounts is duplicated (in From) with the new configuration but it is not showing on account settings. In other words in From I have the same account twice but in settings only one. So if I delete the one in settings will it remove both in From? I hope I am making myself clear!

I am not entirely sure at the moment, I am not on my own computer so I can't check it. I will try and post back later. My Thunderbird handles 4 email addresses, so that's the only ones I see when I click my drop down list.

you're welcome. Glad it's all working now. Enjoy using Thunderbird, there are lots of add ons available to really make the most of it.
