missing/ corrupt file
      #383706 - Sun Feb 10 2008 06:59 PM

hi guys could you help??? upon restarting my computer around 4 days ago,my pc would not boot up, win xp home, sp2, an error message springs up saying,if memory serves me correct,<win32> root, boot.inf file is missing or corrupt(i wrote this down but for life of me cannot find it) please reinstall file. ok.having no xp disc on hand, i managed to get one off a mate, then in the bios settings i changed the boot order to run from the cd drive first hoping this would install said file then everything would be fine........................wrong,i cannot get past this stage of booup. i even tried using the 'last known good configuration that worked' option to no avail. im now using ubuntu as a temp, maybe permanent measure, but would really like windows up and running again, any help would be appreciated.

re run the the xp disc.

Did it go through what looked like a reinstall, where it loads Windows XP, asks for the serial no. etc?

What is the message? Does it start to boot or just stop at a black screen with the message?

It's not that bad and is generally quite stable.

nothing at all, changed boot order to run from cd drive first, re-booted and run windows xp home disc, only to be greeted with this- <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file i cannot any further than this message, running the recovery console only results in the blue screen of death.

Don't use the recovery console. Follow the instructions I linked to in my first post to do a repair install.
