I went to switch my other PC on this morning and a blank screen appeared. When I moved the mouse a green screen covered in 'e's appeared and then nothing. I have no idea why it's doing this cos it was fine last night!!
Please, please help!!!

Sorry to say, but it sounds as if you may have a serious virus attack! It might be that a physical problem has created the bizarre effect, but it sounds more like an attack. If you can boot in safe mode, run all your anti-virus/spyware and re-try. Otherwise it might require a technician to look at the internals and the monitor. Try another monitor if you can, check all connections etc, it is possible it's something simple. Hope so for your sake!

Can you swap the keyboard for a different one?

Edit: ^ Try that first :P
Lets get a few more details.
What version of windows are you running? Is this happening after the computer has booted up or during booting? What is the general spec of the computer? (RAM,CPU,HDD,Graphics)
Either way, if you can not get the computer in a workable condition in Safe Mode then there is little else that can be done short of a wipe clean and re-install. If you have important files on the computer then I recommend removing the hard disk. This can be placed in a second computer to back up anything of interest. Do warn the owner of the second computer that there is a risk of a virus though.

Hi. Thanks for your replies. I don't have a spare keyboard but is it worth me going out and buying a cheap one to try first?
Also, it is happening during boot. I get the Dell screen and it happens after that. I do have important files on there (photos especially). The only other computer I have is my laptop which I would die if it got infected!!! :s
I'll have to have a think about the specs cos I don't know off hand . It has Windows XP that's all I know for now. Sry.

I can't suggest anything more than removing the disk and "slaving" it into another desktop computer. From there I'd copy the important parts then format the disk.
I'd place the blank disk back in the original computer as the master then use recovery discs/Windows discs to restore the system. Don't take my word for Gospel though, someone might be able to suggest something better.

Well, I sent it to the PC doctor and he managed to retrieve and back up all of my data. I now have it back and working but the CPU is running at 100% so obviously everything is slow. If it lets me I will post HJTL later. Just thought I'd let you know how my baby is!!! Oh, and he reckoned it wasn't a virus but a hardware glitch.

Glad it's been fixed. Though it was painful it's a reminder to always save important files to media outside the computer, ie CD or DVD.

JoJo Had it been a keyboard Failure (I had one the other week) a new wired Microsoft Keyboard with no added functions keys can be purchased For 8 to 9 Pounds and it will last for years. Other good brands are IBM, Dell and Cherry All about the same price Buying tip Go to a small computer stre and have a pretend play on the keyboards before you buy and you can look at what type of plug arrangement it has either a Usb or a conventional PS2 connector The Argos PC World people wont let you touch. is a case of look and buy (NO TOUCH can't sell that now it been touched thats spreading bugs!)
