Thanks to help from this forum I haev my desk pc connected to satellite broadband, now I wish to wirelessly connect my laptop through the wireless router. My laptop runs vista and has a wireless card installed but therer are no switches on the laptop to turn it on and I cannot find how to 'turn it on' anywhere. It is an 802.11g mini card wireless adapter MSI Wireless LAN Card. The icon in the system try when clicked on says disconnected. It has two menu options 1. Launch config utilities which says Link Status RF OFF but no-where is there any option to turn it on. Under the other menu Advanced has a green wireless icon showing and a place to turn it off. Seems conflicting one says its off the other indicates its on but it is definitely disconnected. Checking under device manager it says working properly, under power management the option of allow computer top turn off device to save power is UNCHECKED. I cannot find anywhere else to turn it on. HELP !!

Ignoring the on/off strangeness, have you actually tried inputting the appropriate security code to match your router requirements?

I set up my network so my pc is connected to the router with cable (thanks to you LOL) then I went through the wizard on my pc which had me use a usb key to send data to I then had to put it into router then into each computer I wanted wirelessly. I have two laptops to wireless. One has a switch for wireless the other (which I'm having trouble with) does not have a switch. The switch laptop worked fine wirelessly connected but the other laptop cant because it says "wireless card disconnected". After going through troubleshooting it said it needed to be turned on, and thats my dilemma.

What's the laptop make and model? If it's similar to one I was fixing the other day there is a very small slide switch on the right hand edge of the laptop. Virtually impossible to see and only after poring over the manual did I find a reference to it.

I GOT IT WORKING I pressed the bluetooth button and a green light came on the front of the laptop which is supposed to mean wireless, pressing the button twice enables bluetooth. It started connecting straight away, however the icon in the system tray still says MSI Wireless disconnected. The laptop is a Leader notebook I believe made here in Australia. Thanks again for trying to help me out making me scrutinise the latop again for a switch had me playing with the quick launch buttons and thats how I found it by mistake LOL.

So do you now have a fully functioning system connecting via a satellite broadband? Never having met anybody who's got such a system (too expensive in the UK) how is it performing? What sort of speeds do you get uploading and downloading? Do you connect direct to the satellite or is there a sort of group receiving station? Most of the systems I've read about download via satellite but upload over a normal telephone line. Is yours like that?

Because I cant get normal broadband etc the govt pays a subsidy to selected ISP companies to proved satellite broadband to certain areas like mine. It is an 84cm dish on the roof which connects by twin cabling to a modem inside. Its just a plug and play type. The govt subsidy covers the installation costs (usually $2,700) and I pay $29.95 per month (there are other companies dearer than that) with 500mg monthly download at 512/256kbps, unlimited upload. When the limit is reached the speed is then shaped down to 28 kbps (which is better than my old dial up which was 19 kbps LOL). Other companies offering this service have excess fees if you go over your monthly instead of slowing it down. I prefer slowing it down as I ALWAYS go over by 2-3 gig per month LOL, it would cost me a fortune if I was with one of the other companies. It is on a 30 days automatic renewal contract and I have the option to increase/decrease my plan whenever, the next plan up is 1gig for $46.95 month at same speed and other plans go up to 5gig per month. There are faster plans as well, double the speed I get at 500mg month is $39.95. It can be very slow at times so wouldnt be good for gaming and a heavy wind or rain can make it drop for a few seconds, but to me it is easier and cheaper than dial up. I was paying $29.95 for dial up and everytime I dialed up it also cost me the phone call as well. Which was dearer than satellite. I wouldn't have been able to afford the satellite if it wasnt govt subsidised. I hope I explained it simply to you. If you want to have a look for yourself go to www bluemaxx com au . Thanks again for all your help, you must be a whiz kid. I wish my kids were into computers, my daughter only uses her laptop for facebook to keep in touch with her friends but as she lives on Gold Coast (4 hours away from me) I can also keep in touch with her through windows messenger and that saves phone calls as well LOL.

Must be this one then? http://www.bluemaxx.net.au/satellite.html
That works out at about 13.75 UK pounds a month which is pretty good especially as the Government pay for the installation. Just as well they do at nigh on £1250!

That's the nicest thing anybody has ever said to me. Unfortunately I'm fast approaching 65 years old so I'm actually a grumpy old man (ask any of the other Mods).
Good luck with your setup, do feel free to come back for any more help.
