Advice on PC upgrade
      #383279 - Thu Feb 07 2008 08:25 PM

I'm happy with my PC except when editting videos. I use Cyberlink PowerDirector and it takes a "long time" to render. I was wondering whether to upgrade or buy something new. Any advice would be appreciated. My spec is below:

Chipset Vendor Nvidia Corp
Chipset Model nforce3 CPU to PCI Bridge
SMBus Nvidia Corp nForce3 PCI SMB Controller @4C00h
SMBus Nvidia Corp nForce3 PCI SMB Controller @B000h

CPU AMD Athlon 64 2800+
Cpu Socket Socket 754
Processor Upgrade ZIF Socket

250gb of SATA disk.

You haven't said how much RAM you have. That's always the cheapest way to get more from your computer.

Have a look at the Crucial Advisor to see how much you can install and what type.

You'll need to check how much you can install, as there's no point buying loads fo RAM if your system can't take it. You'll also need to post the motherboard make and model so we can see the maximum processor speed as well.

Socket 754 CPUs are getting more scarce as they're a bit old now, but there's a good price one here as an example.

Hi
The motherboard model is NF325-A7, which I think is Biostar.
Which are "faster" CPUs - Athlon or Sempron - any idea of whether it's worth upgrading?
Also, I don't really understand the "speed" of RAM. The memory I have is SDRAM DDR, PC3200 (200 Mhz). Can the motherboard take faster RAM (presumably PC3300...)?

Thanks in advance

Everything you need to know about that board is here

If you look at CPU support, you can go up to 3700 with an Athlon. Athlon's are generally faster than Semprons.

You can go up to 2Gb RAM. Stick with DDR400 (pc3200) RAM.

I'd say it might be worth upgrading if it fits your budget. You can get 2GB RAM here at a good price, and an AMD 3700 here

Don't forget, the links I've posted are the maximum, so look for lower end CPUs if you want to reduce your cost. The RAM is always worth going for the max if possible.
