Was on painfully slow dial-up nd due to my remoteness was able to get satellite broadband - which goes from a satellite dish on the roof to my satellite modem. I have desktop PC which was working fine with dial up but when I plugged in the ethernet cable fom the satellite modem to the pc it didnt registe, the icon in the syste tray had red cross and when I looked at it the message was a network cable is unplugged. Even though there were no errors in devce manager for this, I then assumed that since my motherboard was a bit old and it had on-board ethernet connection I purchased a card and installed it and made sure of disabling the onboard one in BIOS. Still did not work. I unplugged from pc and plugged to laptop and it works fine. So obviously problem is with PC (running xp home latest updates) any suggestions? I really wnatmy pc hooked up as I want to then wireless my laptop via wireless router. Thanks for your help.

The only thing I can think of is the ethernet cable itself. Have you tried swapping it out?

Can you try something rather silly. Connect your laptop to your PC using that ethernet cable. I know it won't produce a signal but I just want to see if it will stop the 'No Network cable' message.

I plugged the laptop into the PC with the ethernet cable and checked the icon and it said "acquiring network address"

That suggests to me that your cable is indeed the problem. Can you borrow another one from somewhere.

I will have to go buy one when next go into town (I live in remote area). Why would the cable work on the laptop to the satellite modem but not from the PC to the satellite modem?

Wish I could tell you. Some of the cheaper ethernet cables don't actually have all 8 pins connected because the newer NICS don't need it. Before you go driving a few hundred miles could you rig up a small test system with a battery, a bulb and a couple of wires to test the continuity of each of the internal wires?
Trouble is that if both the old internal NIC and the new PCI one display the same error message I can't think of anything else that could be causing the problem.
One final thing we could try is to go into Device Manager, open Network Adaptors, right click on each one in turn and choose Uninstall. I would re-enable the original one in the BIOS before uninstalling so they are both visible. Then reboot the PC and let Windows reinstall them both. Then try the connection again.

I have it working now. I had a cable with a wireless router I bought some months ago to wireless my laptop to my PC and I hadnt had a chance to unpack it because of all these problems. The cable works great and I can now access satellite broadband through my PC. I want to thank you soooooooooo very much for your help, I have had this problem since I first got satellite broadband last March !!!
Now all I have to do is work out how to inmstall the router successfully and set up the laptop wirelessly. LOL I may have to repost any problems on this forum LOL fingers crossed I dont have to.
Thanks again, you have really helped me immensely.

Thanks for letting me know. I was reasonably sure I was right about the cable but I had visions of you travelling a few hundred miles through the outback and then finding I was wrong!
Come back to us if you need any more help.
