Fan working overtime!!
      #382937 - Mon Feb 04 2008 09:45 PM

Hello guys
Hope someone can help me out...again!! Recently i've noticed that the fan in the pc goes so fast that it's quite worrying. It would make quite a bit of noise when i run certain appliations e.g. power dvd and other times you can barely hear it. Why does this happen? am i being paranoid? I've reduced the start up programs and services and done all the necessary checks and defragged, but still quite noisy. Also whenever i try to connect to IE it takes quite a while before the page comes up. Can anyone explain why this happens in very simple...i.e idiot's guide simple language just so i can get a bit of understanding.
Many thanks

Hi there, it looks like a mere dust buildup. As your computer draws in air, it also draws in particles. These "dust bunnies" stick to the parts that are designed to cool down your computer. The fan is just working overtime so it can compensate for the heat insulation.

It shouldn't be a bother but feel free to open the case and use either your lungs or a can of spray air to clean out the internals.

Cheers GMAC. Will give it a go and let you know, but before i do i've never had any reason before now to open the case coz i'm a big wuss. Obviously i'm doing this at my own risk etc etc but besides the obvious is there anything i need to be careful of when opening it up?

Just make sure it is turned off and unplugged (hit the power switch after unplugging, as this will drain the last of the power from the circuitry). Tap your fingers on some metal of a radiator to prevent static and that should be about it.

Have a look and see if you've managed to get yourself a dust colony in there :P

GMAC. Once again you've saved the day!!! Thought i was being clever by running the hoover over the vents every so often (Thanks for the tip anyway matty ), but when i got in i was pretty much greeted with a beach in there!! Gave it a good blow and brush, hoover, etc and I can hardly hear the fans now.
AVG runs amazingly quiet now and i don't have to turn up the volume that much higher when watching films. Thanks again mate
