lsass.exe - help me someone pleeeez!!
      #382459 - Fri Feb 01 2008 03:41 PM

Hi all. I have an Advent 7087 laptop here, Windows starts up with the logo, screen goes black, then I get the message "lsass.exe - System Error" and underneath it says "Object name not found". I then click on okay and the laptop goes through this cycle over an over again. I've managed to do a non-destructive system restore - no change. I've tried booting in safe mode and get the same error. I've also tried restoring to last system settings that worked - no joy. I can't even get a command prompt so can't replace this file which I believe is a vital part of the Windows system and is something to do with logging in? There's no password protection on the machine. Can anyone help me? Suffice to say the laptop has much info on which has not been backed up to date ..... ! Please help me end the week on a good note!

Forgot to mention its running Windows XP SP2. I don't have any recovery disks here - it belongs to a friend and I've just been given the laptop and power cable.

I suspect you have been infected with something nasty.

Try running your AV program and if it is unsuccessful, go to the HiJackThis section of this forum and post a log, after first reading the instructions.

Many thanks for the reply. The AV was up to date: this happened after the laptop powered down when unplugged and the error began on restart. I can't run the AV or anything else as I can't access windows or dos. I've done a system restore, restore to last known working settings, and if I try to boot in safe mode I get the same error. I think I am going to have to reinstall windows but I need to get the files off the hard drive. I tried non-destructive system recovery and it didn't work. I've tried connecting the laptop to my desktop via USB thinking it would recognise it as new hardware - no joy and I think I was a bit silly thinking it would be that simple! Any suggestions on how I can link the laptop to my desktop to retrieve the contents of the hard drive? Can I do this via USB? If so do I need some software? I can't load anything on the laptop but can to the desktop.

If you’ve decided to reinstall Windows, buy one of these powered cables to ’lift off’ your data http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136214 It is really adaptable as it will connect a USB port to IDE and SATA drives. All sizes, e.g. 2.5” laptop, 3.5” desktop and 5.25” optical drives can all be connected.

Simply remove the hard disk from the laptop, probably only 4 screws securing it and connect it to the cable.

Burr

That's a damned fine piece of kit! I've just ordered one for future use. Save all that faffing about finding space in the tower then realising that the IDE cable and the power lead won't reach etc. etc. I presume I don't need to worry about jumpers either to convert from master to slave?

Greysts

I don't actually have the model I cited, I have an Ebay Hong Kong version which is identical.

The beauty of this cable is that a complete HDD can be cloned to different sized disks, e.g. using the cable and XXClone, I clone different varieties of Windows on desktop machines to a 4-partition laptop drive prior to upgrading to the beta versions for testing.

USB connections are not concerned with master/slave settings.

A solution for retrieving your files.
Consider either running a linux live CD or a dual install with windows.
That way you can retrieve your files and burn on CD or USB.
The live ISO CD is safest. Download Ubuntu then burn to CD etc.

Hi Golden Warrior.
Try this link

If your still having trouble.
As for tranferring data. You could buy a hd caddy (around £5) from an independant retailer and pop the hd in there and simply transfer by usb to your other pc.
