I have built a new computer with an Novatech Motherboard Bundle Athlon X2 4200, Heatsink and Fan, 1Gb DDR2 667 RAM, AM2 nVidia Motherboard found here http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?MBB-X2421M and an nividia 7300le pci express a420 watt power supply, and a Hitachi HCS72505 500gb hard drive, now it keeps freezing on me windows became unusable couldn't get past loading up. now i have Ubuntu gutsy gibbon on it but still freezing on me (not as bad as windows) i thought at first it was the power supply i had a 300watt supply on it and the video card wanted 350 so changed that to 420 supply but still freezing on me any ideas folks?

I think you're on the right lines, it's one of these :-
-Bad or flaky RAM -Overheating -Inadequate power supply -Over clocking

I didn’t mention software as I believe hardware is the likely culprit in a new build or installation of windows.
Check out the power supply as it’s not the total output that matters but the amps on each of the rails. You need about 28amp on the plus3.3v, 35amp on the plus5v, 16amp on the plus12v and 1amp on the minus12v.
Check out your power requirements here http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/

OK the power supply is a Thermaltake TR2-420w which gives maxloads 20A on +3.3, 28A on +5v, 10A on +12V1, 15A on +12V2, 0.3A on -12V, 2A on +5VSB is that not sufficient? I see you recommend 35A on the +5V I thought I'd got a good supply... may be thats it anyrate in the meantime more ram is winging its way to me we'll see if that helps.

........ Is it just the video card thats straining the power supply? would a lower spec video card be better for the system or one perhaps that could make use of the power supply that comes with this psu that isn't possible with this gpu?....

Change whatever (one component at a time) you need to in order to find the culprit.
I don’t understand how you managed to install Windows without any hitches. I, perhaps wrongly, assumed that you have just installed it, is that so?

Windows installed fine just every now and then froze it got worse in that it froze on startup so i installed Ubuntu the plan oridgonaly was dual boot and see if i could fix windows but Ubuntu would only do a complete install i assumed that it just couldn't see windows so agreed any way and did a complete Ubuntu install the same problems of freezing up occurred which led me to realize it was a hardware problem....so here we are will post back after the ram arrives, should be Monday..Although from what you're saying it could be that the power supply isnt good enough for the GPU so from there it would be a choice of changing power supply or the GPU... mmmmm 512 is a good amount of vid processing power have to look at the cost of changing them. cheers anyway Burr I'll keep you posted

I thought you would have tried a different graphics card. Just put in a low power one for testing purposes. Do the same thing for RAM, sound and anything else you have. Also, remove any external equipment.
