Long Post with Many New ongoing Connection((Exchange upgrade?) issues and even explains a bit about the Seti/BOINC Program Workings
A bit belatedly (3 months after being reportedly LLUed)My local telephone exchange Has had the faster Broadband speed turned ON With my AOL account I had 2 brief outages (end of the afternoon)which Lost me a Posting edit to another Forum! Thought nothing of it when service was resumed. Logged back in later and Cleared my Mail Next I checked my BOINC Manager Program which handles all the Traffic to and from Seti@Home and other servers And It flags up if one of the Programs (I have 5 running) is Needing more Work or B) needs to send a result back to base (Often I have to do this manually...click the "update" button often twice to show the server has accepted the result on a graph.>Statistics Tab) Can view the Process on the Messages Tab.
The messages also tell you lots of other things like How much "work" the program/s are demanding (in seconds) off the Remote server/s.BOINC is only a Manager for co-ordinating matters and does a first class job. As the Computer had been working offline for several hours Some of these Messages were displaying In particular the Einstein Program which is my largest File transfer .1 work unit Lasts 2 to 4 days(Give a good credit when uploaded to the server) as opposed to the "Rosetta's" which can be twice daily but the credit is not good .Combined together They can send you Up several hundred places in the League Numbers (For Pose value only) Currently The Seti Program is calling for more work and this is whats displaying on the Message List
Quote:
29/01/2008 12:30:27|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. Requesting 3452 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
. I expect between 1 and 3 new pieces of work to be downloaded To Keep the cache topped up for a few days(always has at least 1 work unit in reserve) NOTE Should all units for 1 program be used up with no connection (or an outage on the server)Is reported in the Messages. all other programs Continue until the connection is reopened My Tip is Subscribe to at least 1 another Project To keep things ticking over
Lots of Maths needed to get the Maximum credit value and Keep you High in the BOINC League Tables Anyway back to the topic And this is where I made the Discovery the Transfers Tab on the BOINC Program "Holds" any Outgoing Files(On a timer ready for auto uploading when there is a connection) Also stores the Downloaded files briefly for installing
As things stood the computer had been running offline for about 12 hours Been Trying to progress further in Crysis Doing so slowly but surely LOL rest of the Time I left it running between doing Housekeeping in the House and Doing any Outstanding Housekeeping on the computer I should also Point out that I do have a Fast processor AMD 4000 So the Work units are being dealt with Fast and B) The Crysis game Insists on a Fast Processor and a Fast Graphics card (and 16GB Drive space) to Get it to Play PS If Vista is your OS the Spec is Higher again! o:
So at the end of this Session Prior to going on line I Peered into the Transfers box and saw there were No less than 5 work units ready for Reporting ...My custom is to alternate between the update button located on the Projects Tab which is the Front Page and here to observe the download and any upload(due to me) which comes as several files And with quite a lot "to go" there is a Lot of Files to "Come in" So With Einstein that has some large files few 100 K and its a long list
NOW The Numbers.... The Indicated Download speed on My 2.2 MB Link is about 125 KBS Yet I had to rub my eyes when I saw 225 KBS!! And the Files zipped in, in no time Surely a mistake or my Voyager Modem has gone Mad?? The clue (and no email) was in the connection"Arrows" You can Get an Idea without going into the Newwork connections By Brushing over this Icon for 2 Numbers Previouslyl It was(from memory) 1100 RX (commection speed) rounds down to 1.1MB and 288 Tx Download speed Actual Top speeds are I Found Between 40% & 43% Of the RX Number which is 288/100 *43 = 123.84
But when I looked It was showing 5920 RX ...5.9 MB Speed Connection! and 896 TX meaning downloading speeds has Increased "a bit" also. I'd estimate to 300-385 KPS ?
Speed later increased to 6.2 Mb! Download speeds the same Tried several YouTube videos and they Played with NO Buffering Confirmed the Numbers later by going into the Network connections Panel NOTE I Have Not seen what speed My Netgear Router is running at Now Imagine That will be unaffected?
Postscript...Since then the next time I Logged on the Connection speed dropped like a stone to just 160K!!! recovered slightly later To 225K Browsing Video almost impossible! Need a 512K link to See a Legible Short Videoclip (with Buffering) I Did try the Router this time and that was showing 768K Fired off an Email to AOL member services and Could not get through on the Members Helpline (First time in several years) Normally get a prompt reply within a minute or less
Last Night The Speed was Back and Stable @ 6.2 MB so It "may" have Some teething Issues settling in? (acceptable excuse) If they want to see if they can get any more out of the Upgrade, and 6.2MB has been set as a starting point thats cool with me. Was AOLs Target quote:up to 8MB? And on the near Horizon is BT's own Major Exchange update Program which will make the 8 MB Links look as obsolete as 16k and 31k dial-up .(Rumour says they'll have 25 MB on tap?)
Fot the record I have Not Changed price plans with AOL Broadband and have gone speedwise 512MB,1MB,2.2MB ,and Now 6.2MB (For how long?)
PPS Just got online again to Post this just after 11:30PM And.The links gone again! Reading 736/160 = 160 K Cannot report to BT is it time to Give some Hot Air tn AOL Member Services Direction again if I can get through on the Helpline? ME--> (Hopping & !!)

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Spencer It was to show whats My experience(as a Long term user) of Being Upgraded as opposed to the complete beginners at this game who Shout loudly at their ISP and In this Direction
Anyhow Heres an Update on My Predicament
I Phoned AOL up and they have No record of the Update on their records Says I'm still on a 1 MB link WRONG Was a 2 MB Link. They like me say use the Tests at Speedtest ThinkBroadband site the Check out the Link speeds...And thats the only thing they can think of!! All last night Had to struggle by on a 160K connection! Currently The speed has returned Showing 5.9 MB on My BT Voyager Now I'm posting this using my Netgear Router (showing the full 100MB speed Link) Yet Web Pages have be very slow to Update(even From Favourites) and even the Home page has been reluctant to show Repairing the Link has made NO difference Whatsoever (Using the Modem theres no Problem...Don't get that! ) Ps Weather Has been Mild So I cannot blame that and There are NO roadwork In between our street and The Exchange Ruling out those factors
Edit Just Changed back to modem speed is now back to a normal 1.1 MB all in 20 minutes

Like Greyst I'm also confused by this post. Are you seeking help from the forum or is it a blow by blow account of your daily computing woes? If the latter as I suspect, surely it is more suited to a personal blog somewhere else.
Joe.

Was Intended as a Heads up fo any one else gettting theses Blip in speedd (Normally they are downward but I had afaster surge too ) But I worded it wrong Sorry for Baffling you
BTY AOL Tech support In the Meanwhile told me in an Standard Email to reset everything...Nothing wrong with My Browser connection (Have recieved a scheduled connectivity update while all this was going on (No Difference!) Speed is Stable Unchanged @ 1.1 MB
Leaves a Good Question open to Ponder though Viz:- If AOL say we can get "Up to 8MB" on the Line and and They leave it up to BT to "Switch on"(and the Software hardware is in Place) Why are we still crawling along in Low gear? Is there some issue Between the 2 companies? Anybody got an answer to this from AOL Managers or BT Engineering? Could also apply to all other ISPs
