Outlook Express
      #381912 - Mon Jan 28 2008 10:11 PM

Hello
I am very new to these boards so please forgive me if I express this wrong. I'm sure I'll soon get the hang of it. We updated our McAfee last November to McAfee Total Protection 12 in 1. We are running Windows XP SP2. Our problem is we are now having difficulty in opening Outlook Express. It seems as though as time goes by and more and more updates are downloaded for McAfee the worse the problem gets. Sometimes it takes aprrox. 12, 13, 14, 15 attempts to get into our emails. Both my husband and I share the computer and we both have difficulty. We think it is possibly the firewall rather than O/Express and therefore have lowered the security setting but it still does not allow us to open Outlook Express everytime. However, we're worried now regarding viruses etc. should the firewall setting be so low.
If anyone knows the answer we would be VERY grateful as this is becoming a big headache.

Beth12 , it may be a problem with Outlook Express in that it's folders require compacting. To do this open Outlook Express and first make sure in the left hand pane your folder list is showing. If not click on "view" on the tool bar then "layout" and place a tick in the "folder list" box , click apply then OK.

Next : click on "file" then "work off line" Next click "file" then "folder" and lastly " compact all folders".
It may take a bit of time to compact the folders.....DO NOT USE THE PC...... while it's doing so.
When that's done go back to "file" and untick "work off line". Close Outlook and use the windows defrag tool to defrag your drive/s. Once you've done that give Outlook another try.

Let us know if this helps any .

Hello FifeFlyer
Many thanks for taking the time to try & help us with this very confusing situation. Apologies for only just replying did not realise you had responded or that the topic had been moved. Still confused as to how to find where it was moved to!!! We did everything you suggested (when we eventually got into O/Express) but unfortunately since closing it down we are again unable to open O/Express. Have just tried 20 times!!!

Hi beth , sorry that didn't help. The problem now is where to start , there's a multitude of reasons why O.E. won't start. If it's the program itself it could be down to corrupt files. However trying to determine this is fiddly and a wee bit technical.

You mentioned you thought McAfee may be at fault. I've never had any dealings with McAfee and I'm not familiar with it. Although i don't think it's at fault i'm wondering if you've tried to disable it temporarily ( obviously not opening your browser while it's off ), and then trying to open O.E.

Couple of quick questions , what version of Internet Explorer are you using ? and , are you trying to open O.E. from a shortcut on the desktop ( if so have you tried opening it via the all programs icon ).

Hello FifeFlyer,
We THINK we have solved our problem!! We contacted McAfee virtual technician who suggested that our Spysweeper was conflicting with McAfee. We removed this from the add/remove progs. This did not solve it. I have since been fiddling around (techy term here!!??) with McAfee.Hence the reason why I have only now managed to get back to you. I finally realised that it could have something to do with the toolbar which McAfee had placed within O/Express. As soon as I unchecked this O/Express has so far opened up everytime. I am now wondering if SpySweeper should be installed again.Thank you once again for your help. You seem to be very knowledgeable and so will possibly be calling on yours and others assistance sometime. We are very impressed anyway.
To answer your question though we are running I/Explorer 7. Fingers & toes crossed the problem is solved.
Many thanks again

Just in case you're wondering why i asked. I.E. and O.E. are tightly integrated and often a problem with O.E. can be down to the fact there is something wrong with I.E. Basically if you had still been using IE6 ( as many people still are ) one of my next moves would have been to advise you to upgrade to version 7.

I am now wondering if SpySweeper

Most members of this forum agree that it's best to have at least 2 AntiSpyware progs on your pc. It's the belt and braces scenario and one AntiSpy will find things the other doesn't and visa versa.
You already have Antispy protection with McAfee......yes. So another would be handy. Do you reinstall SpySweeper ?? If you've purchased it and you've still a fair bit of time left till the license runs out......i would. However if the license runs out soon you could do what many of us do , install a freebie.
If you choose not to reinstall SpySweeper we can give advice on free options if you so desire.

Thank you FifeFlyer. We have quite a fair bit of time left with Spysweeper so will definitely install it again. Mind you would also welcome some ideas please for the freebie versions for when the license runs out . So far so good regarding O/Express opening everytime. Yes you also jogged my memory about I/E & O/E working hand in hand with each other but then that's another problem from years ago which eventually got sorted!! Lol!

Many thanks. Have copied & pasted the list for future reference. Will have a look at some of them tomorrow. We have just reinstalled SpySweeper & all appears to be running ok. O/Express plus SpySweeper. We already Had Windows Defender installed but McAfee didn't pick up on this when they looked into our system.
Will definitely be back on these forums when any further probs arise.
Night night - Work tomorrow so must go. Thanks again for all your help & thoughtfulness.
