Home network connection problem
      #381504 - Sat Jan 26 2008 10:07 AM

I have just built a new computer to replace my oldest one. The problem is I just can get connection between my other two computers (1 x laptop & one PC). I have a DSL-504 ADSL Router and a hard wired system of cable round the house with RJ45 sockets installed. I have tried my laptop in all positions and it works fine. I have never had problems connecting a computer to this network, even friends who come round just plug-in and it has worked. I installed the drivers that came with the new motherboard and I have run all the updates from MS download site. All my systems are running on XP Pro with service pack two installed on all. I have run network Wizard.

From “Windows Explorer” my older PC shows:-
1. My Network Places> Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network> MsHome>
(a) PC Computer Office
(b) Toshiba Laptop
(c) PC 2008 - this is the new one
I can expand the first two to see all the hard drives etc, but not the PC 2008 (new computer).

I have noticed that expanding the Microsoft Windows Network> MsHome> seems quite show opening (10-15 seconds)

My new computer however shows:- My Network Places> Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network> MsHome

The MsHome does have a cross to it's left, but clicking on this brings up the hour glass for about 25 seconds, then disappears. It does not show either of the other computers. It does give an error message saying:-

My Documents:
MsHome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out of you have access permissions. The list of the servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

Any suggestions.

That error message is usually because of a firewall. Have you added the ip range of the computer to the trusted zone?

Have you run the network setup wizard? It seems a bit simplistic but it often works.

Hi RichieP, Yes I have run the network setup wizard (several times. You may have prompted me. For the first time when installing Norton Anti virus, I did a deal with one off annual payment of £39 for three computers rather that 3 x £39. This installation was done my the Norton (Norton took over my three computers on-line and did the installation. This was done before I tried the networking between computers. It may be a firewall problem, although my laptop and older PC are still networking together, How do I add the ip range of the computer to the trusted zone? How do I find out what the "ip range" is.
Thanks

To find you ip address, go to Start > Run

Type cmd and press Enter.

In the command box, type ipconfig and press Enter.

Your ip address will show.

You can do this on all computers on the network.

They're probably something like 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.3

On the new computer you need to find the Firewall configuration in Norton and set the range from something like 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.10, just in case you want to add other computers.

Norton usually has a Network Wizard in the Firewall section to help you set this up.

Hi RichieP - Many thanks for the advise, all sorted and up a running. Perhaps while I am talking networks you could be good enough to clear up a query I have had for some time on my oldest PC.

When I view the “Network Connections” page I can see the following:

(a) Dial-up
disconnected Firewalled
Intel(R) 536EP Modem.

INTERNET GATEWAY.
I understand the above – it’s the modems I use to access an old website.

(b) Internet Connection
Connected
Internet connection

LAN or High Speed Internet.

(c) 1394 Connection 2
Connected Firewalled
Marvell Yukon Gigabite Ethernet

(d) Local Area Connection
Network cable unplugged, Firewalled
NVIDIA nForce Networking
Controller.

The above item (d) always has a red cross against it, and duplicated in my task bar. This has been the same for around two years. (since the computer was new).

The question what is this for? Can I delete it, if so how. Why was it there in the first place? Is the 1394 my internet connection via my DSL-504 router ?

Would be handy to have an answer.

The LAN connection (d) is your Network ca5rd, or Ethernet port. Leave it there as you never know if you may need it one day. You can disable it if the icon in the system tray bugs you. Right-click and select disable.

The 1394 is a firewire connection. It's usually used for transferring video from a DV camera. It was much faster than the old USB 1.0, but is similar speed to USB 2.0. For some reason it always shows as connected.
