Search Files and Folders no longer available
      #381436 - Fri Jan 25 2008 06:42 PM

Hi
I've lost the search files and folders facility and the search companion on my pc running windows xp. Does anyone know how to get it back?

In summary I press start, search, files and folders then its just a screen with no text but boxes on the left. When you try to select something on the left the boxes are empty. I've tried changing the toolbars etc but whatever I select I still do not get any search options. This means that I can no longer search for items in the computer and have to find them manually. Its been like this for months now and is very annoying.
Any help would be appreciated

Try this clementst ,

Click start > run > in the open box type in regsvr32 jscript.dll > click OK.

Follow the same procedure for regsvr32 vbscript.dll .

Now try the search files facility.

Do you know what I can try next?

Many thanks

You could try a System Restore to a time before this happened.
Worth a try.

Hi

thanks for your post. Unfortunately, this has been like this for some time and system restore only goes back to November.

Any other suggestions?
Thanks

If you're not infected with something nasty, the system file checker (SFC) should install any missing system files. Try it as follows :-

Start > Run, type sfc /scannow (note the space) and have your WinXP CD ready to put in the drive, should it be wanted. If the main Windows set-up screen appears from the CD and covers the progress bar, just close it. SFC will exit with no closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, were replaced look in Event Viewer. If SFC doesn’t start, the RPC locator service needs to be started in Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools, Services.

Tessa , have you run virus and spyware scans , and if so what programmes do you use. As BurrWalnut was hinting at this problem could be down to infection.
If that's not the case there is a registry edit that MAY fix the problem , but as editing the registry is not for the uninitiated , it is usually only attempted when all else fails.
Are you familiar with the registry ???

Hi

I have sygate firewall, avg anti virus, avg anti spyware, spywareguard, spywareblaster, windows firewall. I occasionally run pcpitstop.com utlities. Windows and AVG anti spyware are updated automatically. I run an antivirus check periodically and I've just run one now and it didn't find any viruses. However, the one in December and November did and placed the virus in the vault. When I checked the virus vault I found one that was contained in what I i think is a windows update as it shows as KB......

Apart from the ones in AVG virus vault, I'm not aware of any viruses on my pc. I only know a little about the registry and would want to create a restore point before messing with it.

For such a small inconvenience if there's a danger of messing up other things it may be worth just leaving it? what do you think? It would however be nice to be able to find anything that I want as its a handy feature.

Tessa

Could you give us more details ( name of the file and location ). It is possible , and i must stress possible , that AVG has flagged a file as a false positive , ie it's detected a legitimate file it thinks is a virus. In a case such as this , removing and quarantining a legitimate file could affect anything on your pc that depends on that file.
The other possibility is of course that the virus was legit and has damaged or deleted important files relating to the search facility.

Can you remember if the search facility worked before you quarantined this file ???? .

With regards to the registry edit : have a look at....this....Microsoft article. Don't edit anything yet , but look at Method 2 and check in your registry to see if the values are as they should be. If not , this fix MAY help. It would then be a case of deciding whether to go for it.
As you say a system restore point would act as a safety point.

Hi
Thanks for your patience and assistance. I'm not really that technically minded I'm afraid.

I had a look at Method 2 and those three items/files are all as stated each one had the default value exactly as stated and the second value was set as both. I didn't change anything just looked for now.

The KB update was KB5671-x86.zip was in May not November as I thought. However, it still may be relevant as we don't use the search facility that often so it may have gone wrong in May - who knows.

My OH seems to think we might have lost the search facility when when the we downloaded Windows Desktop Search facility. From my control panel add/remove hardware I can see that it was downloaded in September and the version is 03.01.6000.72

Thanks again - you've the patience of a Saint!!

Tessa

Thought i'd check this out so I downloaded the file ,( must stress i didn't open it ), and scanned it with AVG . It recognized it as the worm Straiton CSR. It has many aliases and a bit of searching suggests it's / was delivered by way of an e-mail attachment.
So AVG done it's job.

As the registry was as it should be , that rules out any editing.

Now , Windows Desktop Search facility........you're other half may well be right. It's a new one on me but a quick google says , as the name suggests , it takes over all functions of searching.
Do you use it ?? if not you could try uninstalling it.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!

It was the windows desktop search facilitiy that was the culprit. We don't use it anyway so I uninstalled and hey presto after a restart there was my search facility and the search assistant puppy.

Many thanks - you're a star. (I also thanked my OH too!)
