<windows root>/system32/intoskrnl.exe. HELP!!!!!
      #380811 - Mon Jan 21 2008 05:48 PM

I slammed my top down to my laptop yesterday. Big argument with my wife....needless to say, now when I reboot I get a msg that says " file corrupt, copy from xp disk this file <windows root>/system32/intoskrnl.exe.

When I moved I lost my restore disk. Any suggestions on how I can fix this?
I have Gateway model N305CRV

Thanks
Troy

1. Stop arguing with your wife as this can seriously damage your computer.

2. Borrow a WinXP CD from a friend. Boot the XP CD and select the first repair option and then copy ntoskrnl.exe from the CD to your hard disk as follows :-

In the following commands, C: represents the hard disk and D: the CD/DVD drive, change them as necessary.

At the prompt, type copy D:\i386\ntoskrnl.exe C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe (note the 2 spaces) and press Enter.

If you can only find ntoskrnl.ex_ then the file needs to be expanded by typing
expand D:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe and press Enter.

3. If the above doesn’t work :-
1. Try method 2 here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477
2. In the recovery console type chkdsk /r
3. In the recovery console type ren C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.old (note the space). Then try the copy or expand command again.

Hey guys, awesome site.

Well yeah I'm also getting this error only sometimes though. I thought I would spend sometime fixing the error. However though? I reboot with the xp cd then press R being the first. Then it asks which windows you want to open. I press 1 then it asks for the admin password. I assume thats the admin password I log in with? or am I wrong? I have never set any other password. So after three goes I have to reboot. Is there a standed password?

I'm new and from Australia so forgive me if this sounds easy for some :P

If you haven't set a password for the administrator just press Enter at the password prompt.
