click on a link but computer freezes
      #380773 - Mon Jan 21 2008 11:37 AM

hi, new to this but couldn't find answer to this problem. recently when on a webpage and I click on a link nothing happens. eg. trying to book tickets but when click on 'book tickets' tab egg timer comes up but can't move to the next page. end up having to log out as cant move back or refresh. when closing it always comes up with program not responding. used Regcure last night and while this has helped speed up computer this problem still persists on all websites, emails with links, etc. Would really appreciate any suggestions on this....thanks

Which browser are we talking about ?

If it's IE7 start off by running with no add-ons. To do this , click on start > all programs > accessories > system tools. Click on Internet Explorer ( no add-ons ). Try some links etc in this mode.
Let us know if this helps.

In IE7 add-ons there is a drop down list for....."add-ons currently loaded in Internet Explorer"......are you saying there's no flash or Java entries .

Try going to tools > internet options > advanced tab > and click on the "reset internet explorer settings" button.

Also , have you scanned for malware ??

sorry but been away for few days. have checked as above but when going through >accessories>system tools>internet explorer(no add ons) page comes up saying it is running with no add ons. when checking through >tools>internet options it does have Java and Flash as enabled. have run Norton again but having difficulties even downloading from the Microsoft site for anti spyware tools as once again computer freezes when clicking on the link for this. not sure about resetting internet settings. dont want to lose anything but having serious difficulties with all links now.

It's what's advised when I.E. becomes unusable . You won't lose anything but keep a note of any passwords you have logged in as thay will have to be re-entered when you next use I.E.

Here's the settings that are reset :

# Resets browser settings: All user-defined browser settings (includes those set by installed extensions, toolbars, and other add-ons) are reset to Internet Explorer defaults. If the user running RIES has Admin privileges, then corresponding machine settings under HKLM are also reset to Internet Explorer defaults. These settings include all customizations which one can make to Internet Explorer through Internet Options. For example: Security settings, Privacy settings, and Zone settings.

# Resets Extensibility: All extensibility entry-points installed by the user are prevented from running automatically. Extensions that are loaded at IE startup (Toolbars, Browser Extensions, and Browser Helper Objects) are disabled; for ActiveX Controls their ActiveX Opt-in state is restored.

# Clears Browsing History: RIES also clears Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, Browsing History, Form data, passwords and auto-complete data.

# Re-applies Manufacturer Settings: RIES restores Internet Explorer customizations applied by the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in the initial package applied to IE via IEAK (Internet Explorer Administrative Kit) or via the settings applied by OEMs during OS installation on the box.

will give it a go after work tonight as it is now becoming almost impossible for anyone to use. did have spyware that I used a while back but don't think I saved it as not on system. managed to get one last night, spyware doctor, that was alegedly free. it detected a few problems but then asked for payment to clear them! have uninstalled it but as mentioned earlier a lot of links are just freezing. Tried microsoft for Defender but froze. any you would recommend? would be grateful for your advice.

I.m not a fan of Microsoft's Defender. I suggest you use the same AntiSpyware programs as i do.

AVG AntiSpyware. Download and install the FREE version.

Spybot Search and Destroy ( free ). Download and install.

Once downloaded check for updates ,run scans ( both programs ), and remove any nasties. After that it's a case of running both apps , say once a week ( always checking for updates before using ). Run both apps .

You could also download and install....SpywareBlaster ( free ) This is not a scanner , but a program that prevents all sorts of nasties installing themselves on your pc. After the initial set up it will run quietly in the background and all you need to do is regularly check for updates.

A question for you billyboy : Which Norton product are you using and how long before it's license expires. ?

thanks for that. will download one. you've been a great help. Unsure what Norton is being used as am not on home computer that much, always using the work one. Will find out as after resetting messages kept coming up saying computer was at risk. Everybody else in the house uses it though and am told that the problem with freezing on some links may be recurring again.will check and get back to you.
