I want to uninstall XP and install Win 2000 I inserted the cd to install Win 2000
A message appeared saying that I was trying to install an older version of Windows and the set up function of Win 2000 would be disabled
Consequently, I would like to know how to remove XP

You'll probably have to wipe your drive to install 2000. This is done by booting from the CD instead of loading XP then inserting the 2000 disc.
Why do you need to roll back to 2000 in the first place? Are there any problems with XP that we could fix?

You could partition your hard drive and have two O.S installed, then boot to the one you want. However, the above question seems to be worth repeating....why would you want to swap from XP to Windows 2000? That's like swapping a new Astra for an Austin A40!! I guess you have your reasons. Webuser has had a number of articles on dual-boot over the last year or so.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I want to revert to Win 2000, because I am using the XP on an old laptop (800mhz) and it it is much slower than Win 2000

In that case, insert the CD in the drive then reboot the PC. You will need to follow the prompts to delete all the existing partitions, create a new one, format it NTFS and then install Windows 2000 in your new partition. That process will completely wipe your hard disk so if you've got anything you want to save, do that first.
You might also want to download all your hardware drivers from the appropriate manufacturers' sites as Windows 2000 may not have then all.
When you've finished installing you will need to log on to the Microsoft site and download the huge number of updates that you will need, include Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
