Wireless connection suddenly gone very slow
      #380551 - Sat Jan 19 2008 05:24 PM

I have 2 computers sharing an virgin cable internet connection via a cable modem and Netgear router. The older computer is connected by a ethernet connection to the router and is working fine. The other is a wireless connection, computer running windows XP, and has been fine since set up nearly 2 years ago. In the last couple of weeks the connection speed has got slower and slower and now I can't seem to connect at all. However the wireless connection is showing as good or execellent and speed shows as anything from 1 mps to 36 mps - but this makes no difference to what I'm actually getting. Have tried connecting with a cable instead of wireless but that doesn't improve things.
Any suggestions? I am thinking of taking the computer to the repairers but would like to know if problem likely to be with the computer, the router or something else.

Have you tried the various clean-up procedures on this PC, things like CCleaner and a disk defrag?

Just to check, did the connection via ethernet make no difference at all? If that's the case then perhaps you might have a more fundamental problem. I assume your wireless connection is secure through using WPA/PSK?

It still didn't connect properly when I plugged the ethernet cable in. Sorry I dont know what the rest of your message means - its an unsecured network (I didn't realise until recently that this means that anyone can connect to it, haven't yet done anything about it).

That is very bad. Your PC may have been already compromised to the extent that it is being used by someone else to act as a 'net bot'. If you use this machine for internet banking you need to change you login details and passwords and check with the bank that nothing has been done to your account. You need to disable your wireless network immediately and not attempt to use it until you get all the necessary security enabled. You also need to read this and then post your own HJT log in the HJT forum.

Oh dear. I have now disabled the wireless network - is there likely to be any problems also with the other computer, or does this just affect the wireless one?
I cant get access to the link you gave, but will try again later (I'm assuming that will tell me how to do the hjt log as I dont know what that is).
I dont do internet banking or anything else on the wireless computer so hopefully this will turn out to be just a computer problem, not worse (Fingers crossed). Can you tell me if you think that a novice will be able to sort it out, or should I take the computer to the professionals?

With our help, you should be able to do everything yourself. As you have two PCs I would suggest you do an HJT log for both of them but make two separate posts in the HJT forum with a note at the top as to why you are posting twice. In the meantime leave both PCs connected to your router via ethernet cable and leave the wireless disabled. Just to make it clear, I meant disable the wireless part of the router not just the PC.

Well, I'll have a go and ask teenage son for help (not that he's much more clued up than me!) - thanks for all your help so far!
