Help setting up a latop with router!!
      #380023 - Tue Jan 15 2008 11:31 PM

Hi
my sister is getting Virgin media 2meg broadband installed in a few days and at the moment she just has a laptop .the laptop is wireless enabled but she needs advice on how to set up a router to send the signal to the laptop to any part of the house. as the cable will just be in her front room she does not want to be confined to just using the internet in that room, any advice would be appreciated.also she has not yet purchased a router so could someone reccomend a good router.thanks in advance.

Here's an example of a router that uses the latest Wireless N standard. Simply connect the VM modem to the router using an ethernet cable then connect the laptop to the router, again using an ethernet cable. It's important that she does the setup this way so she can create the required security on the router before switching to wireless.

She will need to change the SSID, the Admin password and use WPA(PSK) for security. That will involve creating a complex key of at least 12 characters (preferably more) on both the router and the laptop. Once it's all up and running she can remove the ethernet cable between the router and the laptop and use wireless instead.

Are you saying you want to use your desktop PC with a wireless connection rather than wired? If so you need to install one of these into your PC.

I've Virgin broadband. It reaches 20megs so I'm well pleased. I use a linksys wireless cable router. I've hardwired it to an xbox 360, 2 x desk top PCs. It also links wirelessly to my wii and 2 wireless laptops. Even when all systems are on there's no problem....unless anyone wants to download a large file!!

That's what happens when you have loads of kids.

Virgin have been great (previously Telewest).
The router has worked really well. Linked to the wireless laptops no problem.

You can get a USB wireless dongle but I would never recommend using USB for any form of networking, It is slow, unreliable and uses far too much PC resource. Always use the hardware that was designed for the job - ethernet.
