I imagine that by now (10.00 am the next day) that the process is finished so your question doesn't need an answer. Or is it still running? I must admit 12 hours is a long, long time for a re-install. Did you ask to completely wipe the old installation and start over?

thanks for your reply, in answer to your question... i wish that was the case, i left it running all night but it stopped at 51% so i started over, i wiped the old installation to start a fresh one, i formatted a partition that was ok, the copying files is where it seems to hang i done exsactly the same on my laptop with no problems so i dont understand where ive gone wrong, do you think theres a possibility it could be corrupted in some way, there was no virusus or bugs on before i wiped it

Did it give you any indication of an error message? Did you actually delete all the partitions on the hard disk and then re-format them using NTFS?

I had the same problem awhile ago with the XP stopping loading. The problem was that I had a faulty disc in that it had an error on it. Greysts as I recall suggested copying my XP disc with a disc copier such as Nero which will put right some faults from the original. I them formated with the copy disc with no problem. It shouldn't take more than an hour to load XP. Hope that helps.

That just ruined my next suggestion!
Any chance you could borrow a CD from somewhere and use that to do the install but use your own licence number when asked?

You can certainly try leaving it longer but a normal re-install should take no more 1 hour from start to finish. What about asking one of your friends to copy your XP CD for you and then use the copy to do the install?

Let's try one more option. Does the PC have a floppy drive?

Click on this link and download the file to your PC. Get a clean, formatted floppy disk and put it in the drive then double click on the file you've just downloaded. That will create a bootable floppy. Use that floppy disk to boot up your old PC. If that works, we'll go to the next stage.

If you've already got a floppy, just put it in the drive and then open Windows Explorer. Find the A: drive, right click and choose Format. Do a full format not a quick one. Once you've done that you can double click on the file and let it run.

When you start a new install you need the BIOS to boot from the CDROM first so it can do what it needs to do. After you've done the install Windows will automatically boot from the C: drive.
When you've got your floppy disk prepared you will need to change the boot order so it starts with the A: drive.
