Getting an open NAT using SmartAX MT882 and wireless WRT54GS
      #379851 - Mon Jan 14 2008 04:57 PM

Hi,

I'm connecting to the internet using a SmartAX MT882 modem, and using a Linksys WRT54Gs wireless router to supply wireless internet to my xbox360.

Internet--(RJ54)--SmartAX--(ethernet)--WRT54GS--(ethernet)--computer
xbox360--------------------(wireless)------|

I am now able to get an internet connection on my computer AND xbox360, however I'd like the NAT to be open (rather than strict) so that I can have a better online multiplayer experience.

I've looked at a few guides online, but haven't had any success in getting the NAT open. It is becuase of the additional complexity of modem->router->xbox?

Well, I had a go of port-forwarding, but nothing I changed gave me an open NAT.

Using this and this I tried to gets ports 88 and 3074 forwarded to my xbox. I even tried just forwarding the ports directly from the modem to xbox, but that didn't give me any joy either (though I wasn't sure that my xbox was getting the static IP I wanted it to have).

I've also looked at using a DMZ just for the xbox, and letting UPnP do it's thing, from reading these two guides.

Is there anything I'm missing out here?

PS. Just to clarify, the modem (SmartAX MT882) plugs into the router (WRT54GS) in an ethernet port, not the internet port (as the SmartAX is apparently a modem/router with only one outlet). Not sure if that would make a difference for what I need to do.

Have you tried plugging the Smartax into the internet port?

This old thread is the one which told me that I should connect the smartAX to the WAN port on the Linksys, and allowed me to connect the internet using the Linksys router (both computer and xbox360). If I put the SmartAX in the internet port, this doesn't happen.

My problem now is that I'd like the NAT to be open. If I was just connecting straight through the SmartAX, I think I'd be able to get it open, by following one of the links I posted above. But because I'm going through the Linksys router, I'm hitting additional problems.
