A local area network cable is unplugged
      #379502 - Fri Jan 11 2008 09:57 PM

On the taskbar i have the screens with a red x thru them and a balloon giving the message'local area connection a network cable is unplugged but i am connected and all's working perfectly well as it has done for the past 5 years.! All cables are connected and this is my only computer, running xp. I did have to format the hard drive last weekend, reinstall xp and i got this message. In device manager, the ethernet adapter is running properly and both local area connection and 1394 connection are both enabled. If anyone has any ideas at all i will be very grateful! Cheers!

Do you actually have an ethernet cable plugged into the port?

Hi there!
I also have this pic on taskbar and 'Local Area Connection'-Network cable unplugged- and so does my Mum, we are both running Windows XP. I can only presume it means that you only have ONE PC, and are not connected to any others ( as my Internet works just fine).
Regards
Cofelmwood.

i find in some occasions this error message, can be the cause of either a faulty network card or faulty ethernetcable. This can be tested by going onto command prompt on your p.c (on xp- start>run>cmd>open) prompt on your p.c, then by entering "cd\" to begin a new line then do an "ipconfig" test.
details from the ethernet adaptor should now appear, If the ip address is stated as being 169.254........then you either have a faulty network card or faulty ethernetcable. to eliminate the ethernet adaptor, test using usb, if possible.

Hope this is useful.

As the OP hasn't bothered to respond since his one and only post on the 11 Jan he's hardly likely to answer you now, is he? Please don't resurrect dead posts just for the sake of it.
